Product Description

From Amazon.com

It took a few years, but the "Seattle sound" migrated south. In 1997 Creed emerged from the sunny state of Florida wielding dark and dulcet postgrunge tones. Their 10-cut debut, My Own Prison, has became a surprising success by filling a niche for needy teen gloom-rockers. Singer Scott Stapp has the soulful and rich Eddie Vedder inflections down pat, but despite Creed's slightly hackneyed approach, My Own Prison is full of strong, memorable, tuneful songs (and numerous solid singles) coupled with compelling and dark emotions. Titles such as "Illusion," "Unforgiven," "What's This Life For," and "Torn" clearly peg Creed as dour introverts. But despite lyrics such as "Their souls are lost / Because they could never find / What's this life for," Creed is musically tight and dynamic, drawing on melodies that are often moving and uplifting... in a depressing sort of way, of course. --Katherine Turman

5.0 out of 5 stars Creed's First and Best Album, July 5 2004
By
This review is from: My Own Prison (Audio CD)
Arguably the most emotionally 'raw' and soulful of their Albums, I must admit that Creed's My Own Prison surprised me. Surprised because i must admit that i was not a huge fan of their more recent offerings Human Clay and Weathered.

My Own Prison highlights what is missing from many of the self-professed 'rock bands' that continue to exist and even thrive:

A passion and a purity of sound that is simultaneously refreshing and liberating, ultimately distinguishing My Own Prison from many of its contemporaries.

Granted, it does 'borrow' musical inspiration from the revolutionary bands of the early '90s, but it is all a part of the process that is furthering music today.

Although there are flashes of brilliance from guitarist Tremonti and vocalist Strapp (singing on subjects from The Meaning of Life to Judgement Day), it is the band's co-ordination which makes this album what it is. Is it even possible to imagine 'My Own Prison' without Tremonti or Strapp? It's a pity that Marshall left the band, as his subtle contribution adds another musical dimension to the album.

Although Marshall's exit from the band foreshadowed the band's breakup earlier this year, we can only hope that their contribution to music inspires other bands to greater heights.

In summing up, this album is a great addition to any rock music fan's library, not for its originality, but for its musical and artistic perfection.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome cd, Jun 8 2004
This review is from: My Own Prison (Audio CD)
I bought this cd on accident when it first came out..dont remember what cd I thought it was. But I'm glad I was confused! This cd is so awesome, even now, how many years later, I can't stop listening to it. In my opinion this is better then human clay, and much better then weathered. And to all these people complaing about them being pearl jam copies or something. who cares? youve been complaining for way to long..certainly you have better things to do then bash a band that is no more? i hate some bands, but geez, i dont go on for years about it. with that in mind, i would highly recommend this cd!
