Book Description

May 1 2012
A resounding testament to individuality and the power of family in all forms from the young man who “lit up the Internet” (Ellen DeGeneres)

On January 31, 2011, Zach Wahls addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public forum regarding full marriage equality. The nineteen-year-old son of a same-sex couple, Wahls proudly proclaimed, “The sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.” Hours later, his speech was posted on YouTube, where it went viral, quickly receiving more than two million views. By the end of the week, everyone knew his name and wanted to hear more from the boy with two moms.

Same-sex marriage will be a major—possibly the defining—issue in this year’s election cycle, and Wahls speaks to that, but also to a broader issue.  Sure, he’s handsome and athletic, an environmental engineering student, and an Eagle Scout. Yet, growing up with two moms, he knows what it’s like to feel different and to fear being made fun of or worse. In the inspirational spirit of It Gets Better edited by Dan Savage and Terry Miller, My Two Moms also delivers a reassuring message to same-sex couples, their kids, and anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider: “You are not alone.”

4.0 out of 5 stars More Bookish Thoughts... Jun 19 2012
By Reader Writer Runner TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Zacharia Wahls wears many hats: sixth-generation Iowan, Eagle Scout, high school athlete, debate club star, top student, churchgoer, and small business owner. He also happens to be the test-tube son of lesbian mothers.

In January, 2011, at age 19, Wahls addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee, asking them not to repeal the law allowing same-sex couples to marry. This brief but dynamic testimony on behalf of his mothers has received more than 18 million hits on You Tube, providing the marriage equality movement with an effective spokesperson. In "My Two Moms," Wahls recounts how being raised by two mothers prepared him for that landmark day in a Des Moines courtroom.

He ostensibly targets the book at those who disagree with the right of gays and lesbians to marry. Developing his argument, Wahls introduces us to Terry Wahls, an internal medicine physician and Jackie Reger, a nurse, who instill in Zach and his sister Zebby a strong sense of values. When his peers discover his unique domestic arrangement, some taunt him but Wahls stands up for his family, channeling his convictions into a series of school newspaper columns that make him a local celebrity.

When Terry is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, even hardhearted readers will see the value in marriage equality. Jackie cares for her wife through harrowing chemotherapy treatments, but without spousal status, she lacks the authority to approve Terry's hospital care. Wahls recounts these dark moments without histrionics, crafting a powerful portrait of a family united in adversity.

Youthful idealism abounds in Wahls' writing and each chapter is titled according to a Boy Scout law: obedient, trustworthy, kind, friendly, reverent, etc. Yet Wahls' sunny demeanor is never naïve, but bolstered by a formidable command of human nature and law. In an addendum, he takes on every argument against marriage equality and calmly topples them. If Zach Wahls takes up a career in politics, America will be the better for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN INSPIRATIONAL STORY OF FAMILY AND LOVE April 3 2013
By RJ Parker TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
MY TWO MOMS by Zach Wahls is an amazing book told by a brave young man who was raised by two mothers. What a lucky boy! To be loved by both parents who taught him about love, family values, honor and courage.

The foundation of this book is about marriage equality. I totally agree with it. If a child can be raised by two moms or two dads and be taught values of family, love and respect, then who are we as a society to judge them? At only 20 years old, Zach stood in front of the Iowa Legislature and articulately summarized his belief in same sex marriage.

These two women obvious love each other and have put their children first. I salute Mr. Wahls for speaking out and telling his story by way of this book and making public appearances.

Thank you for sharing your story and Blessings to you and your family. A must read. Highly recommended.

Whilst i admire his devotion to his parents, I find that the writer comes off as "prig" - somewhat overawed by his very laudible speech to the assemly
