When struggling poet, reformed alcoholic, and devout Alcoholics Anonymous adherent Paul Peplow interviews the wildly successful, reclusive, and notoriously prickly entrepreneur Victor Quinn, he is in no way prepared for what is to follow. Victor is not only familiar with Paul's obscurely published work but can quote from it liberally; he is also somehow aware of Paul's battle with alcoholism and, without solicitation, Victor challenges Paul with his own confrontational thoughts on addiction, the true meaning of recovery, and what he sees as AA's hidden agenda. Victor then concludes their bizarre encounter by offering Paul a job decorating the legend of his fast-growing Internet business. Yet as surreal as all this is, Paul is even less prepared to deal with Victor's seductive wife, Elsa, also a former alcoholic, but one who continues to drink and tempts Paul in ways that rattle him to his very core.

Slow and somewhat tedious.,

I read the publisher's review of this play. I didn't find the play comical at all--not even darkly comical. It was indeed a bit dark, icy, and stark. If the aloof characters' ennui and distain were intended as comical, then the playwright has been writing in some sublime effusion that I can't seem to grasp. There is some nice poignant dialog every now and then, but I really can't recommend that anyone should buy the book for those rare moments. Perhaps if it is meant as a postmodern existentialist work, it could offer something to the reader. I hope that future reviewers will offer their own greater understandings. My recommendation: don't spend a lot of money on this.

An HBO movie was made of the play starring Jonathan Price, Uma Thurman and Paddy Considine. In the hands of these artists, the dialogue is nuanced, hopeless, vicious, desperate, lonely, often cruel and rarely funny. They took my breath away. I think it helps if you have a passing aquaintance with addiction. I would view the book as the written record of this performance.
