Rob McEvily started up Six Sentences in September of 2006. Many fine writers took to the format and submitted pieces for him to review and post on his site. He now has presented over 2,950 six-sentenced gems. At the end of 2009 he began posting one piece each day, otherwise, that number might be significantly higher. Flash writers, have no fear! Rob set up the 6S Social Network on Ning in April of 2008 as another outlet for writers enamored of the short short form to get in their licks, and what a success that has turned out to be. The 6S Social Network recently celebrated its 10,000th post. Not bad in just a little over two years, eh?
Every so often, Rob sets up a challenge to write on a theme, or prompted by a graphic, and The Mysterious Dr. Ramsey, a collection of 82 fictions by 80 different writers is the result of one of his latest challenges, and what a superb collection it is. I'm not just saying that because I have been graced with a page in the book, nor because so many of the friends I have made on the network appear along with me. This is a truly outstanding collection, presenting as many different takes on the photo prompt of a mysterious woman and the name Dr. Ramsey as there are stories. Each one is unique and of a high caliber of writing.
Dr. Ramsey sometimes appears in these stories as a male, sometimes as a female, and sometimes the doctor is merely incidental to the tale, or is something other than human. Eighty writers let their imagination run wild, and reading through their work, you will rarely be disappointed. There is some nuance to every piece that lifts it out of the ordinary.
Some names you may not be familiar with yet, but soon should be: Bob Clay, Sal Buttaci, Paul de Denus, Peter McNiff, Bill Lapham, JM Prescott, Grey Johnson, Rod Drake, Gita Smith, Joe Gensle, Nicole E. Hirschi, Teresa Cortez, Jared Culpepper, oh, the list goes on and on. You should buy the book and become familiar with all these writers. It's money well invested as you will find yourself returning again and again to savor your favorites.
If you're a writer, and you enjoy crafting tight little tales, you should look into joining the Six Sentence Social Network. You might find yourself in the next collection. To all readers: There are several 6S collections now in print, and all offer quality flash fiction, but without a doubt The Mysterious Dr. Ramsey is one of the best.
