Book Description

Mar 1 2006
The Mystery of Edwin Drood is Charles Dickens’s brilliant contribution to the field of crime and detection. In fact, the novel is even more of a mystery than Dickens himself intended, for he died before completing it, making it a favorite of literary detectives.

Against a background of opium dens, nocturnal graveyard visits, and moldering monastic crypts, Dickens weaves a tightly knit plot centered on the ominous disappearance of young Edwin Drood. Suspected of foul murder are John Jasper, a drug-addicted choir-master who hungers after Drood’s fiancee, and Neville Landless, a Ceylonese who had previously quarreled violently with the missing man. With dark, brooding atmosphere and masterful characterization, Dickens is at the height of his powers in this final and unsurpassed work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only For Dickens Fans! Mar 15 2012
By Pierre Gauthier TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This work is all the more mysterious that Dickens died before finishing it and left no clear indication as to its resolution. Apparently, dozens of hypotheses have been devised and debated since it was published almost a century and a half ago.

Yet, the story about the novel is perhaps more interesting than the work itself. As is frequently the case with Dickens' tales, the characters are numerous but they all lack depth. None is particularly engaging, including Edwin Drood and his fiancée. The plot and sub-plots are thin and largely predictable. Dialogues are artificial and drawn-out. Dickens' trademark tongue-in-cheek is remarkably absent.

It must be pointed out however that the audio rendition is impeccable, with a touch of music inserted between chapters to lighten things up.

Overall, though, this work can only be recommended to die-hard Dickens fans.
