Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6--When Nancy Drew and her friend visit Lilac Inn, mysterious events occur that seem to indicate that Nancy's presence is unwanted there and the Inn may be haunted. After her friend's diamond jewelry is stolen, Nancy must try to solve the mysteries and recover the jewels. Actress Laura Linney briskly narrates this original Nancy Drew mystery by Carolyn Keene. Her expressive and crisp rendering of the tale is occasionally too fast, requiring that listeners pay close attention, especially during descriptive passages. Although the material is dated, such as when a telephone switchboard is mentioned and a character wears an "aqua organdy dress," listeners will still have fun trying to solve the mystery on their own from the clues provided before the conclusion of the book. Orchestral music in the background, lush with string instruments, adds to the moments of peril within the narrative.--B. Allison Gray, John Jermain Memorial Library, Sag Harbor, NY

As Nancy's friend Emily prepares for her wedding, Nancy andHelen visit her at Lilac Inn. Before long, a weekend of scuba divingand wedding planning turns into disaster as Emily's heirloom diamondsare stolen, as is Nancy's identity, by a larcenous doppelgänger.Laura Linney does an admirable job reading this 1930 mystery, althoughshe's not completely believable as a young woman of 1930--even onewith the tenacity and spunk of Nancy Drew. Further, her pace seemsrushed. Nevertheless, the story is a good one, filled with surprisinglore about lilacs, and the action is punctuated by mood music andsound effects. 4.0 out of 5 stars " LILAC INN " Open For Business, April 10 2009
By
Nancy along with her friend Helen are invited to the Lilac Inn where they are guests of their friend Emily. Turns out Emily is about to be married and Nancy and Helen are her bridesmaids.

Emily along with her fiance John are the new owners of the Lilac Inn. Lately alot of strange occurances are disrupting their progress to open the Lilac Inn to the public.

Nancy is asked by Emily to sort all this stuff out. Later on Nancy discovers that another woman has been impersonating her and buying things with her stolen charge plate. She is accused of writing forged cheques and has to clear her name before its too late.

Stolen jewels, bombs going off and fires are just a few of the exciting things that Nancy has to contend with before this case is closed. Meanwhile some of the Lilac's Inn staff become suspects as well.

This book was great. I enjoyed reading very much and would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true classic, Aug 23 2004

This review is from: Mystery at Lilac Inn #4 (Hardcover)
I started reading the original Nancy Drews eleven years ago when I was just eight years old, and no matter how many times I've read them since, I just never get tired of them. 'Mystery at Lilac Inn' is a perfect example of why. As usual, Nancy's just trying to help out a friend when she finds herself confronted with a challenge she naturally can't refuse, ending up embroiled in any number of unsavoury situations before the final page comes around. The mystery is genuinely intriguing, and while slightly old-fashioned dialogue might put a few readers off, it's really a treat to see halfway decent speech patterns for a change. An honestly enjoyable mystery combined with a heroine who was surprisingly modern for her time makes for a classic that is every bit as delightful today as it was forty years ago.

I read the 1930 version. The book was well written, but never managed to hold my intrest for some reason. I just found it boring.
