Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Writer Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) deftly straddles the line between superhero story and spy thriller with this series. Bad-girl shape-shifter Mystique, who can look and sound like anyone, is forced into working for X-Men leader Professor Charles Xavier (her former enemy), in exchange for protection from the many governments and other groups that want her dead. Mystique serves as an agent for Xavier, carrying out missions with which he cannot be associated should they come to light. Vaughan stresses how little anyone trusts Mystique, and how little she trusts anyone else in return. He enlivens the basic premise with sharp dialogue, smart characterizations and innovative uses for a shape-shifter's powers (e.g., taking the form of a child to force soldiers into hesitating during a crucial firefight, or creating a pouch behind her stomach to smuggle illicit firearms through airport security). Mystique's handlers come in the form of longtime X-Man Forge, who can build anything, and tiny tough guy Shortpack, a six-inch-tall telepath who provides witty banter. Lucas's art is clean, clear and nicely depicts subtle emotions, which is handy, since Vaughan packs this thriller with dramatic tension. Don't let the pinup-worthy cover fool you: Mystique is a smart, engaging piece of espionage fiction that shows that the superhero story isn't dead yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystique Vol.1, Sep 4 2006
This review is from: Mystique Volume 1: Dead Drop Gorgeous TPB (Paperback)
My favourite good/bad girl is probably the blue skinned woman known as Mystique. Any admirer of Mystique would enjoy this comic, and it's quaint storyline. Xavier needs a undercover agent, Mystique is being hunted, throw is Forge and you have your own mini version of "007". Or that's what is being advertised. They throw in Forge because he is an old "fling". Xavier because he is known as a good guy, and Mystique because she is the easiest character to use for undercover operations. She has partner, Shortpack. They take on missions and Mystique is approached by another man, giving her freedom is she does one thing. Kill Xavier.

5.0 out of 5 stars forget the core titles. the fringe is where the quality is, Aug 23 2004

of the past ten or so story arcs i've read among grant morrison's run on new x-men, chuck austen's on uncanny, and chris claremont's on x-treme x-men, not one of them even comes close to the first arc of the solo title mystique, centered on everyone's favorite x-men universe villainess. the core titles' writing has been consistently ridiculously farfetched, slow, or untrue to the characters, and oftentimes all of the above. but vaughan's take on mystique is of the quality of ultimate x-men: loads of great action with surprisingly fresh twists in plot and in characters' powers and personalities. the title has mystique working for xavier as his private 007, and in this first arc she is sent to cuba to avert an international mutant vs human crisis. vaughan's interpretation of mystique's personality is occasionally a bit off and his plot is a bit manipulative at times. he gets mystique's sarcasm and cockiness but doesn't quite successfully figure out how to deal with her sometimes conflicting emotions and motivations. but despite the wobbles on the emotional side (which hopefully will be smoothed out in future story arcs) this one is a definite winner, especially when coupled with some great artwork from jorge lucas. a must read, esp. if you've liked ultimate x-men.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, July 18 2008

After seeing all the Marvel films of late, I wondered how they compared to the actual current comics. I started reading the highest rated series I could find, namely Astonishing X-Men and this one. Both are great, but I have to say that this is the best X-book I've read in the past few years. The entire 4 volume set is amazing, but I think this one slightly outshines the remaining 3. In short, it's the most entertaining Marvel book I've read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps the bar up, July 10 2007

If you are like other items by this author (such as Runaways, Ex Machina, or Y: The Last Man) you should like this one too. It's right up there. Good story, makes me interested in a character I otherwise wouldn't have cared that much about. Good art also.
