The CPU is more than enough for both daily tasks, light gaming, and BD playback. The GPU handles Trine, Torchlight, Serious Sam HD, The Witcher (not #2), and others in 1080p at or very near 60fps with high settings. More demanding games like MW3 or Skyrim are playable but require dropping the resolution a bit, but no fear, this screen scales very well. The GPU also overclocks pretty well and can give you an extra 10-20% in games, but isn't necessary most of the time.
It runs cool and quiet and the aesthetics are top-notch. There is VERY little keyboard flex, the hinges are strong, and the touchpad is very responsive with easy to click buttons. I upgraded it to 8GB of DDR3 1333 and an Intel X-25M G2 SSD and it flies.
The specs are obviously some of the best you can find for this price point. Comes with blu ray software and drive for playback and it does work. The speakers are interesting. They're really trying to make good speakers but unfortunately they focused a lot on making them louder. The problem is sometimes it becomes SO LOUD that it distorts sometimes. This really only happens though when you mess with the audio settings and get the treble too high. It's a nice try but they've still got work to do on creating good quality speakers.
But the 6 gigs of RAM, i5 processor are all over 7.0 on the WIndows experience index. All in all this is hands down the best laptop I've owned, and the display is the best I've seen on a laptop. The keyboard is okay.. I think I like this style of keys better than the new chick let style. The track-pad I really don't use much because I use mobile mouse. The bottom line is this laptop makes a good gaming laptop and desktop replacement and with the full 1080p HD you're really not missing much from a full desktop. I also like that it's 15.6 inches rather than a huge 17 inch beast.
Buying any of these ASUS's in this series is gonna be worth it. If you can afford the higher end one I'd go for it. But this one is also epic considering the price. :)
But seriously, this laptop is great. I've had it for over a month now. When I got it, I thought it was a big larger than I'd expected, but it is sure a powerhouse. The Full 1080P screen is gorgeous, I love how it's matte. No glare. Everything runs extremely fast and smoothly. I have loads of tabs on my two browsers and so far, no lag. I've used the blu-ray player with no hitch, the quality is fantastic.
I enjoy the design of the laptop as well, and the sound is certainly a bit fuller than other laptops, though certainly not like JBL speakers. Keyboard is solid, everything is just built well. This is my first ASUS laptop, and at a price point lower than other companies for a laptop with specs like this, this was an amazing deal. I need to learn some of the quick shortcuts or gestures on the mousepads that will make the laptop even more user-friendly and easy to use, but I'm quite pleased with it already as is. This is certainly an entertainment laptop!
The i5 CPU is great and is never fully utilized, even with multitasking and running several virtual machines simultaneously, Making this a great development machine as well. I now run several operating systems without issues. The only thing I will do in the near future is upgrade from 6GB to 8GB RAM in order to add capacity to run additional machines.
1. I needed something with an i5 Processor or better, as I planned to play games on it.
2. I needed something with a large hard drive, as I have a lot of music, videos, etc.
3. My budget was $900 and I was coming right out of high school.
This is the best laptop I have ever used. As I write this review on it, the keys feel awesome, the screen is awesome, no pixels have died, the computer itself has never died, it literally has worked perfectly for two months. I even have several games installed on it that take a LOT of processing power - such as Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, and Bioshock. I haven't even noticed it skip.
If you have less than a thousand bucks to spend on a laptop, and you don't want to buy a crappy $400 one from HP or something - then you should run, not walk, to get this laptop.
