Part History, Part Love Story, Part Classic,
By Sandra R (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nefertiti: A Novel (Hardcover)
I stumbled across this book while surfing Book Browse, and finally decided to take a chance after hearing great things about it on Philippa Greggory's forum. Boy am I glad I did.Part History The reason I read historical fiction, and not just biographies, is because I like my history to come "alive." This is what Moran does in Nefertiti, and I've never read another book on Egypt that captures the ancient world so well. However, some reviewers have wrongly criticized her facts, saying there was no black plague in ancient Egypt, when there absolutely was. I'm guessing Moran must get this a lot, because on her website she directs readers to an article in National Geographic which talks about how plague originated in Egypt. IMO, I felt that Moran accurately portrayed the 14th century BC. I particularly enjoyed her descriptions of Egyptian beauty products like henna and kohl, and the way she evoked the landscape made me feel like I was standing in Egypt with Nefertiti. Part Love Story Although Nefertiti is ambitious, cunning, and often cruel, this is a love story. There's nothing I like better than a historical fiction that combines history with passionate love, and I am dreading the sequel, since I know that the narrator will have to lose her love somehow in order to end up with the man she does (I'm trying to avoid a spoiler here! If you want to know who Mutny ends up with, read the Author's Note at the end). Part Classic The reason I think this book will be around for a while is the fact that the themes are classic. Two sisters, both struggling to define themselves. A narrator who falls in love with a man her sister forbids her from marrying. A king whose ambition brings about his downfall. It's all there, and this book is highly recommended. My book club read it this Christmas and absolutely loved it!

This review is from: Nefertiti: A Novel (Paperback)
Writing historical fiction set in the Eighteenth Dynasty, ancient Egypt, is a challenging endeavour and difficult to deliver. With a vivid imagination the author has created an interesting spin on a fascinating chapter in history. This is a dramatic tale of two unforgettable sisters one so beautiful she will attract the attention of all Egyptians. The story is narrated by Mutnodjmet (Mutny), the younger (haft) sister of Nefertiti. She tells the story of how her beloved sister, a woman of exceptional beauty and great aspirations to power eventually marries and becomes the ruler of Egypt. It commences with the arranged marriage of fifteen year old Nefertiti to pharaoh Amunhotep IV, a young man with great plans that include changing the entire spiritual structure, ultimately making Aten (the sun disk) the center of worship. It was hoped the marriage would tone down Amunhotep's vision but as fate would have it, Nefertiti had high ambitions of her own and like her husband wanted the complete support and adoration of the people. As we progress through the pages, we follow the struggle to change the course of politics and worship of the Egyptian population. Strong family dynamics come to life within the main thread and we see double dealing, corruption and vengeance running ramped in the Royal court. It is the ultimate recipe for a Dynasty spiralling downward to a disastrous ending. I enjoyed Ms. Moran's version, she provides an exciting atmospheric story where the reader can almost see the sights, smell the scents and hear the sounds. Of all the characters I preferred Mutny, she is portrayed as a loveable and sympathetic person a complete contrast to her egocentric and unstable sister and the Pharaoh. I also found the unusual dynamic between the pharaoh and his daughters particularly interesting. Some may find the dialog to be a bit too simplistic but it made for a light and a refreshing summer read for the none purist. The novel is highly fictionalized to make it entertaining so history critics should probably take a pass or take it for what it is.

One of my favourites!,
This review is from: Nefertiti: A Novel (Paperback)
This book grabbed my attention from the start. Michelle Moran is skilled at bringing life to her characters and her knowledge of the history of the time is impeccable! I fell in love with the characters as well as Egyptian history while I read this book. The story is so amazing that I couldn't put this book down... I was transported right into the story as I read it.I will read this over and over.
