this movie is much better than i had expected or hoped.it basically
tells the story of young Hannibal Lector and how he became the monster
we all know and love(or not)today.the movie is a bit bleak at times, but
not enough to stop watching.i thought the actor who portrayed
Hannibal(Gaspard Ulliel)in his teen years and beyond,did a fantastic
job.he was very sinister and exuded evil.his performance was very
chilling,to say the least.i'm glad they chose an actor relatively
unknown to most North American audiences.it gave the actor a chance to
make the character his own.there is a real air of mystery to the
movie.i also liked the fact that Hannibal is portrayed in a sympathetic
light.he isn't really the villain in the piece.but make no mistake,he
is evil.i really liked the air of the movie.i also thought it was very
stylish.i liked the colours in the movie.i think it is certainly better
than "Silence of the Lambs"and i think i even liked it better than
"Hannibal" and even "Red Dragon".i guess I'm saying "Hannibal Rising"
is the best of the franchise so far.for
me,"Hannibal Rising" is a definite 4.5/5

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as you might think July 6 2007
Format:DVD
This is a fairly enjoyable enactment of Hannibal Lecter's early days growing up in the throes of world war 2. We learn how he becomes a cannibal, why he became a doctor and the reasons for his insanity. The film is entertaining and we actually pull for Lecter to gain revenge over the war criminals who ate his sister alive. His asian love interest, played by the beautiful Gong Li, is heartstopping and one of the major reasons to watch this movie. I would say that this is a necessary entry in the series, and a good profiling of Hannibal Lecter's early days. The major downside is the performance of the lead who plays Hannibal Lecter, an otherwise unknown actor who delivers an awful performance. if you can get over that, you should enjoy this film.

After a nice enough Red Dragon, the latest (back then) Thomas Harris book took Hannibal Lecter and told his origins story.

Whenever a film tackles a character and explains just about everything to the point where all the dramatics and mysteries disappear, it renders the character dull.

The novel itself was a bit too 'mainstream' yet nicely written, but this film feels like a hack and slash with a young Lecter.

This time, don't look for a cameo from Hopkins, which would have probably helped a bit. We're left with a tasteless movie with a few great moments (think water tank), and actors, a welcome ingredient.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bloody tale of revenge and murder! Sept. 8 2013
Format:DVD
Hannibal Rising tells the story of Hannibal Lecter who starts out as an innocent little boy, but becomes a sadistic killer by the time he grows up into a young man!

Upon losing both parents during the midst of the Second World War, Hannibal and his sister Mischa are held up by five Nazis in a cabin. Looking for food to eat and shelter, with no rations. The men set their ruthless, greedy eyes on the two children.

Eight years passed and Hannibal has been placed in an orphanage of what used to be his family's old home, with no memory of what happened to his sister. He decides to make a break for it, and takes a train all the way to Paris where his Japanese aunt Lady Murasaki resides. The woman takes him in to live at her mansion and the boy begins to find happiness with his relative.

Hannibal Lecter commits his first murder against butcher Paul Momund, who sexually harassed Lady Murasaki at the market in front of him. Hannibal is interrogated by Inspector Popil at the police department since he fought with the man, but the results from the polygraph could not prove him guilty.

The young man enrolls at a medical school. Lady Murasaki sells her estate.

Hannibal gradually remembers the men killing Mischa and then eating the girl. He captures Herr Dortlich who was one of the accomplices involved when revisiting the partly destroyed cabin in Medininkai. Hannibal Lecter kills the man after forcing Dortlich to reveal the whereabouts of his former comrades. He readily sets out to hunt down the remaining war criminals so he can avenge the murder of his sister! Popil wants him to turn them over to the authorities, but Hannibal has a personal score to settle with the men!

This suspenseful thriller has everything a devoted horror fan could ever ask for!
