5.0 out of 5 stars Oscar for Bale? Dec 1 2007
Rescue Dawn is a film based on the true story of Dieter Dengler, a German-born American pilot whose plane is shot down over Laos. Captured and brought into a POW camp, him and other American prisoners suffer through torture and poor conditions at the hands of the guards. Plotting their escape is the easy part; surviving the jungle on the other side of those fenced walls will be much tougher...

Phenomenal movie, one of the best of the year. Bale continues his astounding acting streak with this movie. The physical rigours he must have gone through during the making of this film are painfully and realistically rendered on his haggard face. This movie will satisfy many; those who like war films, those who like jungle adventures, and those who want to witness an Oscar worthy performance. Another fine film from Herzog, the German director of "Aguire, the wrath of god". If you loved this movie, then get Aguire as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, great Blu-Ray Aug. 30 2009
By Andrew
The film is based on the true story of German born Dieter Dengler who was a US pilot during the Vietnam War. He was part of a secret bombing mission that took place over Laos, during the course of the mission his plane got shot down and he became a prisoner of war.

This is a movie that I really enjoyed; it vividly and painfully recreates the brutal ordeal of trying to survive in a Vietnamese POW camp. The acting and writing are both top notch with the supporting cast (especially Steve Zahn) being the standouts. As with most movies dealing with war and history there are some historical inaccuracies but they don't ruin the film.

The video quality is fantastic and by far the greatest selling point for this Blu-Ray. Colors are well saturated and vivid especially with all the foliage around and within the deep jungle. Black levels and contrast are excellent. Audio is solid as well with great jungle ambiance that definitely adds to the film's realism. There are even some good extras which include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a 5-part making of documentary among other things.

If you're a fan of the movie I definitely recommend this Blu-Ray, it has great video and audio, it's a great addition to anyone's high-def collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Herzog has still got it May 25 2009
By Brian Maitland TOP 500 REVIEWER
It's difficult to see what yet another Vietnam War movie can add to the genre until you start watching this masterpiece of filmmaking. Werner Herzog's movies can at times be way too intense to get through but they are worth the journey. This role of Dirk Diggler (oops, real life war hero Dieter Dengler, I meant) also proves Christian Bale is the best actor on the planet period (sorry, Deppster and Leonardo).

You can read the synopsis elsewhere so I won't spoil it but the casting was spot on and the cinematography is superb esp. from the opening bombing raid
sequence through to when Bale gets captured.

Also, fans of the TV series "Lost" watch for the Darma Intiative's boss in a bit part and Faraday as the yin to Bale's yang in the POW camp.

The extras are well worth the price of the DVD as you get about 45 minutes of how the actors got that POW look, how Herzog threw himself into the task, how the jungle is truly a "character" in the movie and the true story of how the real Dieter Dengler shows how an optimistic outlook on life can truly be lifesaving.

If I could give this more than five stars, I would.

5.0 out of 5 stars little dieter flys Nov. 26 2007
Wow, I was totally impressed once again by Christian Bale and ever since The Empire Of The Sun where he plays the young boy in the Japanese prison camp has impressed me time and time again with his dedication and his focus and effort in his acting and shows that he is tops in the business.Rescue Dawn is full of life and is so intense with action and real life jungle, this director has out done himself.Three cheers for Dieter, Christian and the rest of the cast includeing the p.o.w dog who steals a few sences.Rescue Dawn will have you cheering and feeling good about yourself.A rollercoaster of emotion that will stay with you forever.Nice commentary by the director which rounds out the film and shows that if you want it any thing can be accomplished and Rescue Dawn is a high flyer.Three cheers for Dieter,a true American Hero !!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rescue Dawn March 25 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
This was a war movie -- and I usually don't like war movies -- but this one was different as it was an inspirational story (apparently based on a true story). It made me appreciation what soldiers have done for us during the Vietnam War-- fighting for our way of life and facing so much adversity -- they are truly brave people. The movie was based on one soldier who did not give up and he went thru so much (but the scenes were not too violent so I could watch it).
