The text of this book is useful; however, the practice or sample questions are completely misleading. I took this test the day before yesterday. The exam questions are much longer, much wordier and orders of magnitude more difficult than any of the sample quesions in the back of this book.

I am currently a teacher of earth science and i purchased this guide to prepare myself for the exam. I don't think that this book should be a trusted source of information. I found many typos within the book, which was my first clue about its reliability. Then I found a few places that had mis-information and even more sections that were so brief as to be misleading. I only used this book as a guide of topics (which you can find online on the NYS website) and then used a college textbook (tarbuck and lutgens) to study. I wish that I bought a different studyguide.

This book is 100% not worth the money they are charging for it ($64.95 print price, but around $49 through Amazon is still ridiculous). There's no test prep just a basic outline of Earth Science topics in the format the NYSTCE site lays out. You'll have much better luck using the Barrons review book (the blue one, NOT the red one <-- they only have regents exams). The blue barron's book has a ton of Earth Science review with regents questions to practice (multiple choice and open response). They may not entirely capture the scope of the NYSTCE BUT it's much more in-depth compared to this book.Also, the XAM book has typos everywhere, and I have had to consult my professors multiple times b/c some of the multiple choice questions are incorrectly worded and/or they give you an improper answer. The book absolutely fails to capture the difficulty of the real CST exam and you would be better off using the prep guides on the NYSTCE website.
