Book Description

Once there were great magicians born to the Maghuin Dhonn; the folk of the Brown Bear, the oldest tribe in Alba. But generations ago, the greatest of them all broke a sacred oath sworn in the name of all his people. Now, only small gifts remain to them. Through her lineage, Moirin possesses such gifts - the ability to summon the twilight and conceal herself, and the skill to coax plants to grow.

Moirin has a secret, too. From childhood onward, she senses the presence of unfamiliar gods in her life; the bright lady, and the man with a seedling cupped in his palm. Raised in the wilderness by her reclusive mother, it isn't until she comes of age that Moirin learns how illustrious, if mixed, her heritage is. The great granddaughter of Alais the Wise, child of the Maghuin Donn, and a cousin of the Cruarch of Alba, Moirin learns her father was a D'Angeline priest dedicated to serving Naamah, goddess of desire.

After Moirin undergoes the rites of adulthood, she finds divine acceptance...on the condition that she fulfill an unknown destiny that lies somewhere beyond the ocean. Or perhaps oceans. Beyond Terre d'Ange where she finds her father, in the far reaches of distant Ch'in, Moirin's skills are a true gift when facing the vengeful plans of an ambitious mage, a noble warrior princess desperate to save her father's throne, and the spirit of a celestial dragon.

5.0 out of 5 stars An addictive and successful new story from a masterful author, Feb 24 2012

I am just finishing the first of three in the Ms. Carey's new Saga. I couldn't put the book down. I have read everything JC has published to date (with the exception of the werewolf based books which are not of interest to me) and have loved the intricate story telling, the lush character development and huge scope addressed in each book. Naamah's Kiss was another winner for me---Moirin mac Fainche is different from Phedre and Sidonie in many wonderful ways; but all ways lead to "The Way". I loved the story and have already ordered the other two books.
Enjoy your reading, all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best, but still a decent read., Aug 7 2009

This review is from: Naamah's Kiss (Hardcover)
While I found Naamah's Kiss sufficiently engaging to finish reading, I had to spend a few moments groping to remember the heroine's name. Moirin is no Phedre, not as well fleshed and somewhat vapid, and despite trying to keep an open mind, I kept being disappointed that the book was built around a time and place (and person) so far away from the original trilogy.

But Naamah's Kiss is not a bad story. Whatever else may be said about Jacqueline Carey, no one ever said she couldn't write. It is only so unfortunate for her that with all three books of the original trilogy and Kushiel's Mercy she set such a high bar for masterful writing. By masterful, I refer to the intricate puzzles that Carey has laid in part in each of these books, one that is self-contained enough to be satisfactory on the basis of an individual novel and yet still part of a greater grand plan. But while the existence of a greater unseen plan is evident in Naamah's kiss, there is a failure to meet the criteria of self-contained and satisfactory, and since being spoiled by Carey previously and being burned so brutally on this score by Terry Goodkind, I am leery of a tale that requires multiple novels to go anywhere conclusively before rewarding its readers.

Fortunately, Carey seems to prefer two and three book sets, so satisfaction hopefully will not be far away.
