Book Description

March 2007
'It was dark when I came to. What woke me was the cold and the water on my legs. I was doing spoons with Scotty, me behind him. We were on a beach. We didn't speak for the first minute, we were so disorientated. I had to genuinely think very hard about where I was. Then I remembered I was in Australia.' It's the late eighties and 24-year-old Kerry has been drifting aimlessly through life in Edinburgh. Rarely having plans of any kind, she gets drunk and things happen: sex, drugs, parties, relationships, and, when she's really pushed, work. Setting off on a hastily arranged visit to Australia, Kerry packs only three items of clothing, a pair of flip-flops, two hundred pounds and her young persons' work visa. Soon broke, hungry and homeless, she joins ART, a likeable but mismatched band of travellers who sell dodgy oil paintings door-to-door in the suburbs. Young, beautiful and free, they drink wildly and live for the moment. Embarking on a riotous road trip together, their lives become deeply entangled, and the drinking spirals out of control. Eventually, Kerry is forced to admit that her journey to Australia isn't quite what it seems...

"A beautiful depiction of addiction and hedonism" -- Russell Brand "A sexy, booze-fuelled adventure. Instantly entertaining and absorbing" Heat "Splendidly realised ... bravely un-saccharine" Daily Telegraph "Extraordinarily candid and moving ****" Mirror "Nihilistic, frank, brutal, embarrassing, depressing, funny and intensely gripping all at once" Glasgow Herald --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

About the Author

Rhona Cameron first made an impact on the UK comedy scene in 1992, winning Channel 4's prestigious 'So You Think You're Funny' award. A decade of sell-out Edinburgh Fringe shows and tours in the UK, Australia and New Zealand followed. TV credits include Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, and Parkinson. She hosted four series of BBC2's pioneering GaytimeTV, and co-wrote and starred in the BBC2 sitcom, Rhona. In 2002 she joined the West End cast of The Vagina Monologues, before heading off to the Australian jungle for the first series of ITV's I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! Her now famous'Sometimes...' speech earned her a 'TV Moments of the Year' award. Her memoir, 1979: A Big Year in a Small Town, was published in 2003. Rhona still lives alone in an overpriced, substandard flat in North London. She is in the physical shape of a thirty-year-old, but is much older. She plays in defence for Camden F.C. Nothing else matters quite so much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but a little repetitive in it's telling July 24 2007

Overall I enjoyed this book and the ending brought an unexpected tear to my eye.

It follows the story of a young lady visiting Australia from Scotland in the quest to locate a long lost family member (won't tell you who for the risk of ruining the story). She takes up a job selling bulk art door to door and spends the rest of her time drinking or conducting her search. She comes unstuck when on a trip to the Gold Coast with the rest of the sales team and her and one of the guys get roughed up big time in a dodgy pub.

The story goes through the selling and some of the less than ideal techniques for securing the sales and at times the theme of getting drunk, having sex with strangers and acting as though none of it is affecting her gets a little tired but it does move the story along.

The part where she tells about Scottys condition after they get beat up is pretty gut wrenching and I found it quite unnerving.

The storyline of Anaya falls flat besides someone else for her to jump into bed with and though I think the writer intended for this to be the more real and honest relationship it doesn't quite get there. Anaya leaving and her not knowing whether she'll see her again lays it flat rather than creating wonder.

The mention of Joyce the Carpet lady and the tattoo also kind of fall flat and though they are mentioned in the story line of the Radio DJ nothing comes of it. I think the attempt to tie them in was there but it was poor.

As I say, the end where she finally locates her family member and they meet was certainly the emotional clincher for me.

Reading back it sounds as though I hated this book but I didn't, I have pulled out some of the failings I saw but overall it was an enjoyable read. Certainly something I wanted to keep picking up to see where it was all going to go.

Give it a go and enjoy it for what it is.
