David Zucker--of the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker creative troika behind Airplane! and television's Police Squad!--directed this 1988 feature film based on the latter show. Leslie Nielsen returns to his old TV role of Lt. Frank Drebin, the deadpan idiot with a detective's badge. The reinvention of the failed series as a theatrical feature seems to have inspired everyone involved to make a pretty funny movie, and the jokes gather a momentum that lasts until the final act. Ricardo Montalban is a perfect foil as a villain whose aquarium is being invaded by Drebin during routine questioning, and George Kennedy is delightful in a self-parodying part as an earnest but obtuse lawman. There's a hilarious bit when Drebin--wearing a live police wire while going to the bathroom--can be overheard over the loudspeakers at a speech given by a flustered mayor (Nancy Marchand). Yes, that's O.J. Simpson as a detective who ends up on the wrong side of numerous Drebin blunders. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars The Second Funniest Film Ever Made!!!! April 19 2004
Format:DVD
Eight years after their groundbreaking classic AIRPLANE! (1980), the ZAZ boys return to form with THE NAKED GUN - FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD! In the interim period, they of course had directed a couple of films (most notably TOP SECRET! in 1984, which was only sporadically funny and a relative disappointment) and worked on some others, but they had never managed to come even remotely close to the all-out hilarity of their original blockbuster mega-comedy. In my sort-of-humble opinion, with THE NAKED GUN, they nearly match the incredible AIRPLANE! pound-for-pound (or gag-for-gag). Based on the gloriously failed 1982 TV show "Police Squad!" which they also produced, wrote and directed, THE NAKED GUN pulls out all the stops from the very beginning, and it doesn't let up till the end---and by that I mean the VERY end, as in the end of the end credits!
Starring Leslie Nielsen as the perpetually stone-faced, bemused detective Lt. Frank Drebin (which, on top of his similar character of Dr. Rumack in AIRPLANE!, has bought the previously dramatic-oriented Nielsen a second career as a top comedic actor) and co-starring George Kennedy as his partner, Captain Ed Hocken, Priscilla Presley in an equally-surprising comedic role as Drebin's love interest Jane Spencer, the now-ironic O.J. Simpson as the repeatedly-injured Det. Nordberg (gotta love that name on him), Ricardo Montalban as the villainous multi-millionaire Vincent Ludwig, Nancy Marchand as Mayor Barkley, Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer Reggie Jackson as himself, and Jeannette Charles as Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, this movie throws everything at you plus the kitchen sink. Just as with AIPLANE!, it is impossible to get all the gags on the first viewing alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy July 18 2004
Format:DVD
Based on the failed tv series "Police Squad", 1988's "The Naked Gun" was a smash comedy that gave new life to Leslie Nielsen's career (he had previously been reduced to dramatic roles) as well as escued the team of Jerry and David Zucker and Jim Abrahams, who hadn't had a hit since 1980's equally hysterical "Airplane" (which also starred Nielsen).
Frank Drebin (Nielsen) is a bumbling cop who is assinged to look into a plot to kill Queen Elizabeth at the World Series after his fellow oficer and good friend Nordberg (O.J. Simpson - yes, that O.J. Simpson) is nearly killed. The prime suspect is a businessman named Vincent Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban). Drebin and his partner Ed Hocken (Georeg Kennedy) will stop at nothing to find out who's behind the crime. That is, if Frank can avoid the charms of the sexy Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley).
This is a great film for anyone who loves to laugh. And get the two sequels as well and pray they comeout with a fourth one soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece May 17 2004
By L. Ngai
Format:DVD
When asked what my favorite movie of all time, I always instinctively utter "The Naked Gun." While not everyone really appreciates this movie, unless you're into goffball comedies, this has to be one of the funniest movies ever. Not sure what else can be said about it. Puns, punchlines, side gags, are all brilliant. I laugh out loud every time I watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Asbolutly Hilarious! March 3 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
This movie is the funniest ever made. Lesley Nielson does an excellent job as a clumbsy, absent minded cop. After one cop is shot 6 times, Lt. Frank Drebin sets out to catch the person responsible and learns that there is a plot to assasinate the queen at a baseball game. The thing that makes this movie so funny is that Frank doesn't realize he's doing things wrong, such as his urinating in the bahtroom being heard on national television or him causing his car to explode because of an out of control air bag. The gags and quotes are just to funny. Great movie, I suggest you see it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Poignant Love Story Oct. 6 2003
Format:VHS Tape
Not since Tracy and Hepburn have I been so moved by a cinematic romance that tugs at the old ticker. Leslie Nielson as hardworking, nose-to-the-grindstone Lt. Frank Drebin teams up with Priscilla Presley for a hunk of burning love in David Zucker's epic, THE NAKED GUN.
Presley plays Jane Spencer, who happens to be employed by evil Vincent Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban). Ludwig is the target of a criminal investigation led by Drebin--a ruthless, relentless investigation that tests the very limits of Drebin's endurance and competency--and the starry-eyed, ever innocent Jane finds herself falling head over heels. In love.
But the budding romance is derailed. Sadly, tragically, Frank's job challenges Jane's loyalties to her boss. . .to her own fragile ability to keep calling Drebin "Funny Face." And after a golden, yet fleeting, romantic interlude--complete with mustard, ketchup, Hermit's Hermits and a "nice beaver" rejoinder--we witness a romantic showdown in an Anaheim baseball stadium that ultimately will decide the shadowy fate of these two tragic lovers.
See THE NAKED GUN. You will laugh. You will cry. You will wonder if O.J. was driving a Bronco to and from the set. You will be astounded by the homeliness of British royalty. But most of all, you will be cheering for Frank and Jane, hoping beyond hope that their love will endure--at least until the next sequel.
--D. Mikels

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic
One of the funniest films of the modern era (if all time). Skip the sequels -- they go too broadly cartoonish which doesn't work in the least, and check this out. Read more
