Steve Vai's Naked Tracks, Aug 6 2009
This review is from: Naked Tracks - Box Set (Audio CD)
I'm not a guitar player so my review of this box set will be limited to non-player knowledge. Steve Vai designed this set for guitar players to improvise over. He removed the lead guitar from select tracks from the following albums: Passion & Warfare Sex & Religion Alien Love Secrets Fire Garden Alive in an Ultra World The Ultra Zone Real Illusions: Reflections He encourages the players to improvise rather than learn the original solos, and make loops of songs in order to play away as long as they want. As I said I'm not a real guitar player, just a wanna-be, but I love Steve's music and I enjoyed hearing his songs deconstructed. You can hear a lot of keyboards and backing guitars that you can't hear with the lead guitar mixed in up front. Some songs, as a listener, don't work at all like this such as "The Audience Is Listening" as there's not much backing music. Again though, this wasn't really designed for listeners like me. At this price, guitar players are getting a lot of music for their dollar. They might never play or use some of these tracks but you can't argue with the value. For players, you're going to get a lot of use from these CDs especially when you download the sheet music from Vai's site. Vai writes arrangements that will give you a lot of challenges and fun options to play over. For the average listener such as myself, you will only play this occassionally. It will definitey give you insight to the songwriting and recording talents of Steve Vai, and maybe you can use the tunes to just chill out as background music at home. At this price maybe that is enough reason for non-players to buy it. Only a guitar player will truly get maximum use for this box set, and I think they will use it a lot.

What to say? Original tracks to jam on. Brilliant. Its not one of those Sessions Presents the Recorded Versions of Jim Neighbors(Performed by the Countdown Singers)type thing('Jim Neighbors Naked'? Yikes!). No Jamey Abersold here. Well worth the money. Remember, if you can't play like Vai yet, don't kill yourself trying. Just jam along, make up your own melodies, use the original melodies, then work in your own riffs, scales, etc. Take it easy. When you get to that Vai level, then get the transcriptions. Remeber, the last thing people want to hear is a Vai clone, like that guy who 2nd placed the Gutiarmageddon at the Crossroads in Dallas. Granted the winner was a Michael Hedges clone, which I thought was lame, though he was good. Whatever. You get my point. Good solos aren't always about speed. Take the first solo on 'Comfortably Numb'. Few notes, brilliant. Speaking of 'Naked' Beatles fans check out 'Let it Be Naked'. Its awesome. All the bs Phil Spector on it is removed to reveal what the feuding Beatles(McCartney, basically) wanted.

Steve Vai~Genuis Breaking New Ground, Once Again!!!, Jan 18 2011

Steve Vai's accomplishments as a guitarist are legendary and well documented. However, what are comparatively unheralded are his compositional talents. As a musician that has played guitar for twenty plus years, I originally bought "Naked Tracks", as I'm sure most did, as background tracks to practice advanced concepts over as the tracks "Naked Tracks" CD's simply removes (i.e.; Naked) the lead guitar from his original recordings and allows a guitarist the freedom to express themselves over these remarkable recordings. BUT, what I didn't expect was to enjoy these as stand alone CD's for great listening. Because I was so focused on Steve's un-earthy guitar prowess, you almost don't get the opportunity to appreciate the underlying music. "Naked Tracks" reveals this and again evidence that Steve Vai's genius has no boundaries
