This review is from: Nancy Drew #7 The Clue In The Diary (Hardcover)
When Nancy, Bess, and George happen to be out driving they hear an explosion. They see that a mansion has blown up and has started burning. Nancy, Bess, and George go onto the property to see if anyone was hurt by the sudden explosion. They learn that the mansion belonged to the Raycroft family. Mr. Raycroft she learns has a very shady reputation for swindling hopeful inventors of their patents.
Nancy begins looking for survivors and happens to see a man slip through the hedge and disappear. She also learns that no body was ever recovered from the fire and starts to wonder about it. She later finds a diary that contains the important clue in this case. Meanwhile she has befriended a young girl named Honey. She learns that she and her mother are very poor and wants to help them. She learns that Honey's father Joe Swenson who is an inventor has left the family to go and seek work and mail money to them. To make things more complicated Nancy learns that Joe Swenson has become a prime suspect that may have caused the explosion at Raycroft's mansion. The reason being of course that Joe was swindled by Mr. Raycroft and has threathened him with harm. Nancy wants clear Joe's name because she thinks that the explosion may have not been just an accident. This book was great from start to finish. It had lots of tense moments and lots of adventure as well. Definitely worth checking out.

Dated Classic,
By Ron Atkins "Ron" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nancy Drew #7 The Clue In The Diary (Hardcover)
If you want to get started reading Nancy Drew, this book would be the place. Of all the ND series, I think I enjoyed this one the most. While Nancy and her friends' activities and dialogue seem a bit dated (don't forget most of these stories were written long before you were born) Nancy is a wholesome character who is constantly busy observing her environment and sticking her nose into places it may not belong. Of course, this kind of behavior is what makes a story interesting. This book deals with arson, stealing patents, and helping an innocence victim find justice.Wild bill recommends this book for mystery lovers aged 9-12.
