Product Description

With hairy warts, a stern-looking unibrow and one extremely protruding buck-tooth, Nanny McPhee is a wonderfully comedic substitute for Mary Poppins in this entertaining family fantasy. By loosely adapting Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda children's books of the 1960s, Oscar®-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who's under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown's raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they've come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colorful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy Waking Ned Devine. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, Nanny McPhee offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please Wallace & Gromit fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness. --Jeff Shannon

The Sound of Music’s Von Trapp kids

look like the Brady Bunch

compared to Cedric’s seven imps

who eat their own for lunch

When nanny number eighteen comes

they quickly hatch a plot

but quickly learn the McPhee dame

is Mary Poppins – NOT!

All dressed in black with walking stick

she’s got two ugly moles

a unibrow and one buck tooth

and pores like giant holes

Although they try to tame the Shrew

they’re like a book she’s read

She makes them learn their lessons

and to quit while they’re ahead

No Cheaper by the Dozen

their dad has had his fill

without his Great Aunt Adelaide

he couldn’t pay a bill

He’s got one month to find a wife

to please Aunt Adelaide

but when he picks a cruel witch

some fresh new plans are made

As long as she can fill a need

Nanny McPhee will stay

but when that need is at an end

she has to go away

A family film for everyone

and highly recommended

a fairy tale where all ends well

and you’ll be sad it’s ended.

this is a good movie.it is directed by Kirk Jones, writer and director
of "Waking Ned Devine"it has something for everyone.mild rude humour
for the kids, bit of romance for the adults.okay maybe teens won't like
it.It is a fantasy movie,so it obviously much of it is not realistic of
course.it echoes 1964's sound of music, but is more complex and has more
depth.Ther are some dark moments which may be a little frightening for
really young children,so use your discretion.the film is very colourful
and well photographed. The acting is very good, although this not a film
where the actors had to dig deep to find their
characters.Anyway,Mr.Brown(Colin Firth-"Bridget Jonse's Diary 1 and
2","Love Actually")has a problem.he is a single father with 7
uncontrollable children. They have managed to drive away every Nanny he
has hired, usually in days or less.the local Nanny agency will no longer
supply him with a nanny telling him at one point something along the
lines of"they're all gone",you've driven them all away".So,one day,in
walks the mysterious Nanny Mcphee(Emma Thompson,Love actually,
"Stranger Than Fiction", also wrote the screenplay based on the
children's novels"Nurse Matilda,by Christianna Brand).but she is no
ordinary Nanny,as is quickly revealed.what follows is chaos, comedy
romance until what should by now be the obvious ending.the beautiful
and very talented Kelly Macdonald("Finding Neverland","The Girl in the
Cafe" plays the love interest.Angela Lansbury also appears in the movie
as does Imelda Staunton.overall,a fun family film. 4/5

I had seen this movie twice before and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to own it.
Your prices are really very reasonable and the two movies I ordered were here within a week.
It is a highly entertaining fantasy story, scary for younger children, but a good plot and of course a happy (and hilarious) ending.
The children were all very good actors and the naughty ones added just enough spice to make you
wonder if you should dislike them, but after a few days with Nanny McPhee they were, after all,
just children.

As an old person (77 yrs.), I can honestly say I really enjoyed Nanny McPhee! Emma Thompson is wonderful, as is Colin Firth and the rest of the cast -- especially the children. I am not the least disappointed with this film, and am happy to have it in my library of films (over 500).

Well done Emma. This may not be on the level of a certain previous nanny movie that had all the Hollywood bells and whistles but it is certainly great entertainment the whole family can enjoy.

The good witch turns up to correct the misgivings of both parents and children. I wish there were more people like that.
