Book Description

May 10 2012
What if, in a world where mathematics could be magic, the thing you desired most was also trying to kill you? Dom is a numerate, someone able to see and control numbers and use them as a form of magic. While seeking a mathematical item of immense power that has only been whispered about, it all goes south for Dom, and he finds himself on the run across three countries on two continents, with two unlikely companions in tow and a numerate of unfathomable strength hot on his tail. Along the way are giant creatures of stone and earth, statues come alive, numerical wonders cast over hundreds of years, and the very real possibility that he won't make it out of this alive. And both of his companions have secrets so deep that even they aren't aware of them, and one of those secrets could make for a seismic shift in how Dom and all other numerates see and interact with the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book all the way through! Feb 1 2012
By CJClink
Format:Paperback
If you liked The Golden Compass -- try this one! It has a great beginning and a dynamite ending. But like a lot of novels, it meanders in the middle. Of course I said the same thing about Boy's Life by Robert R. McCammon -- which won both the Bram Stoker Award and the World Fantasy Award. So, this may be a problem with me and not the book. :)

I liked the characters, the mystery, the math!, and the settings. Which is to say, I liked pretty much everything!

4.0 out of 5 stars Number magic Jan 28 2012
Format:Paperback
Very cool number magic and lots of action made this a good read. The beginning pulled me in and I loved the numerical artifacts. (Though I think my fave scene remains the Scottish traffic circle.)

I must confess, I am not a reader of fiction, but with a great recommendation from a friend, I picked up this book. Since then, I've spent most of my free time reading and enjoying this fast-paced and intriguing story. I've already purchased another copy and gave it as a gift. The ideas and concepts, and the whole universe created by Derryl Murphy, is so unique and thought-provoking, it forces the reader to keep reading to find out what other ways the physical world around us can be manipulated by math. This novel really shows you how integrated numbers are in our everyday lives -- from bank cards, money, license plates, telephones, etc.

However, Murphy's mathematical universe is so complex and filled with unanswered questions, the book left me with a hunger for more detail and closure, that could not be filled in a novel this size. Some of the coincidences were not resolved, and I felt some of the plot lines were left open. I hope and wish for a sequel, which will elucidate some of the questions that I'm dying to have answered about this world, about its inhabitants, and about the potential of this mathematical power.

Read it, enjoy it, and be prepared to yearn for more.
