5.0 out of 5 stars culmination of the trilogy, Jun 13 2004

This review is from: Naqoyqatsi (DVD)
This film is a fitting conclusion to Godfrey Reggio's trilogy (which took 25 years to make) because it brings to the front the prophetic vision which has informed all three films. It's prophetic in that it's a *warning*, that life on this planet, in the grip of technology, is getting more and more commodified, mechanized, regimented and branded. In the first two, the vision was there, but the viewer was likely to get distracted by the sheer beauty and fascination of the images (and the Glass music). In this one, though, the images throughout are "tortured" (Reggio's own term, in the panel discussion viewable on this disc). The result is not for the faint of heart, though the music (thanks largely to Yo-Yo Ma) helps to bridge the gap to more human feelings.

I have to give this 5 stars even though Powaqqatsi was actually my favorite of the three. This whole enterprise was and is unique, and Naqoyqatsi brings it to a climax.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, May 24 2004

Quantum Prescience (this endless-beginningless-impermanent-reality) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Naqoyqatsi (DVD)
I was shocked to see that this masterpiece had a 1 star rating. I felt it clearly did NOT represent me and I decided to write this little review. In each of the Qatsi movies (should we call them that), there is an underlining message that is beautifully conveyed through image and sound. Naqoyqatsi is about life as war and they did a wonderful job in exquisitely representing that concept.

I feel each and everyone is entitled to their opinion but it frustrates me when people dismiss something I feel is a significant achievement in pushing the envelope of artistic expression when they were probably expecting a Hollywood action flick with cheesy lines and dumb action sequences.

This movie if for the individual that is willing to try new things; that is not afraid of being patient while getting use to something different. Since this is a work of associative imagination, so a thing called intelligence is needed for you to "get it."

The soundtrack is another masterpiece in and of itself. I've always been into heavy rock but ever since having watched this film, I've been listening to this soundtrack as it blew my mind in all its layers, colors and complexities hidden within complexities.

I truly loved this film. I downloaded it, purchased the DVD, soundtrack and recommended it's viewing to all my friends that I felt could appreciate its message of this world's intrinsic transience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crapqatsi, Nov 18 2003

In the words of the Comic Book guy from the Simpsons - Worst Movie Ever!!!!! I really enjoyed Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi, well, it pretty good too. So when I saw Naqoyaqatsi trailer, I thought, "That looks good." But when I saw this movie, it was all I could do to keep from pulling it from my DVD player and flinging it out the window to the street below in the hopes a transport truck would run it over!! The first 20 to 30 minutes is okay, it's a really great shot of an old wrecked building. As for the rest of the movie - give me some stock footage, let me reuse the end of Koyaanisqatsi (the exploding, spinning rocket), let me shoot some other crap I saw on the way too the studio, maybe take some other stock footage and then toss it all on a computer and make really boring effects over and over and over and then maybe use some photoshop on it and presto, I have Naqoyaqatsi!!!!! Maybe I am being too harsh....nah, I'm not being harsh enough. This movie just plain sucked!!! Why, oh, why, couldn't they have just brought back Ron Fricke (cinematographer from Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka) to shoot Naqoyaqatsi. To say I am disappointed in this latest installment would be an understatement. I give it -10 stars!
