Naruto is a ninja-in-training with a need for attention, a knack for mischief and, sealed within him, a strange, formidable power. His antics amuse his instructor Kakashi and irritate his teammates, intense Sasuke and witty Sakura, but Naruto is serious about becoming the greatest ninja in the village of Konohagakure! Believe it!

Naruto, Volume 1,
By Donald MacAndrew (Toronto) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Naruto, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
As fitting of Shonen Jump titles, I found "Naruto" bred from many of their similar themes... violence and the odd scantily-clad woman. However, though it is obviously focused towards young boys (and teenagers), I still found it quite enjoyable, largely owing to Masashi Kishimoto's dinamic and stylish artwork. I have seen a few episodes of the anime, and the animation does little justice to the 'spunky' artwork at the core of "Naruto". As for the story line, it was somewhat refreshing compared to the slaughter-scentric material Shonen Jump usually presents. I found Naruto's over-enthusiastic, over-confident personality quite amusing and have since picked up more than a few of Kishimoto's serialized manga.I was surprised to become oddly attached to the young hero of said vibrant story, the action scenes never eluding me of satisfaction. In all, it was a cute little read, something I especially don't mind picking up on Sunday to pass half an hour. I recommend it to those who are looking for (somewhat juvenile) comedy, fast-pased action and intriguing artwork.I honestly don't see how "Naruto" could disappoint, even to the most grudging and narrow-minded readers like myself.

Stop complaining about translations, geez,
By Jetto (Hattiesburg, MS United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Naruto, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Viz had to get their translations approved by Masashi Kishimoto, so I don't see what the problem is. Kage bushin no jutsu is 4 japanese WORDS. That's why they changed it. I'd rather them call it Shadow clone technique/art instead of art of the doppleganger myself, but the name change doesen't affect my enjoyment at all. If you're too wrapped up in names to enjoy the manga, then you need help. =/Sharingan and Kamehameha(since you mentioned dbz) are words created specifically for attacks (however, in kamehameha's case, it was taken from a hawaiian king, heh). Stupid n00b anime/manga fans are ruining things for everyone with their complaining. If you're too cheap to buy an 8 dollar manga novel, then that's fine, but don't try to get other people to do the same unless you have a vaild/worthwhile point. By the way, this volume of naruto rocks. Don't miss it!

And I'm telling you, it's worth every penny! The fansubs are still out there, and I'm up-to-date with episode 90, and I've read the first and second Mangas. This series is an amazing feat of work and creativity!Naruto, a boy with the spirit of a Kitsune inside him, struggles to become the greatest Ninja ever! Action-packed, humorous, you'll laugh... you'll cry...you'll be very glad you bought this!
