3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Murder Mystery Set in the World of Country Music, Dec 20 2010
By stoic - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Nashville With a Bullet (Paperback)
Years ago, I read an article that recounted Barry Sadler's life. Sadler was interesting - Green Beret, entertainer, murder defendant, novelist, and - finally - murder victim under mysterious circumstances. I was very surprised to learn that Sadler was a successful writer and made a mental note to read one of his books.

I never got around to reading Sadler until I found Nashville with a Bullet. The novel is about people in the country music scene in Nashville - aspiring musicians, businesspeople, cops, and gangsters. Inevitably, there are dirty dealings and people start to die.

The best thing about this book is that it "moves." Sadler (and co-author Billy Arr) keep the narrative moving with enough action, sex, and plot twists to keep it from bogging down. The novel also evokes the atmosphere of the music scene in Nashville - from the gilded palaces of the stars to the seedy taverns where the "wannabes" wait to be discovered.

There are several problems that prevent me from giving the book more than three stars. The authors use the "omniscient narrator" perspective and it is confusing because the story is told from so many different points of view. For instance, one narrator is a truck driver who appears for a few pages, then disappears. The truck driver's story is not related to the plot - so the reader works hard to understand this material for nothing.

The book could have used an editor. The writing is decent for the most part, but occasionally there are lame lines. Consider: "His a--- tightened, as if ants were crawling slowly around nibbling" (p. 5). The novel is filled with sex, which wouldn't be a problem if the sex scenes were well written. Unfortunately, these scenes are juvenile and written with a "locker-room" mentality. As an example, when hanging up the phone one character tells another "Keep your p----r wet, buddy" (p. 238).

Nashville with a Bullet is a decent, easy-to-read action/mystery novel. But don't get your hopes up too high.
