Product Description

GISELLE - Canada's Beloved prima ballerina Karen Kain and premier danseur Frank Augustyn star in this timeless tale of doomed love and eternal longing. The romantic ballet tells the story of the peasant girl Giselle who goes mad with grief and dies upon learning that Albrecht, her peasant lover, has deceived her and is not really a nobleman. In the ballet’s haunting second act, the Willis, maidens who have betrayed and died before their wedding day, attempt to dance Albrecht to his death. But the power of love prevails and Giselle, now a Willi herself, saves him.

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY - This spectacular version of the ballet classic stars Rudolf Nureyev as Prince Florimund and Veronica Tennant as Princess Aurora. The lavish Emmy Award-winning production is a feast for the eyes and ears with its brilliant performances, choreography by Nureyev, visually resplendent sets and costuming, and sumptuous Tchaikovsky score. Nureyev, who speaks briefly about the ballet and gives an outline of the classic tale of jealousy and the power of love, introduces The Sleeping Beauty in an on-camera appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a DEAL!!! Jan. 6 2005
This is a MUST have for fans of the National Ballet of Canada, and NUREYEV! In Sleeping Beauty you get Nureyev in his prime as the Prince, Veronica Tennant, Prima Ballerina as the Princess, and a very young Karen Kain and Frank Augustyn in the Bluebird Pas de Deux! This si the production that brought Canadian ballet into the international spotlight. It is history in the making.
Giselle stars Karen Kain and Frank Augustyn, early in their careers. Giselle is always an emotional experience. This is another jewel.

2.0 out of 5 stars National Ballet of Canada Jan. 23 2013

This DVD is a terrible disappointment. The dancing is good but the visual quality is bad and the audio is horrible. Watching it once was painful and I don't want to see it again. I'm going to give it to Good Will and feel sorry for anyone that gets it. It's sad to see ballets marketed with such awful sound qualities. I'm being generous to give it two stars, but that's because of the dancing. As to audio I'd give it zero stars. Don't waste your money on this one.
