Product Description

From the Back Cover

In the ancient tradition of using indigenous materials to create baskets of beauty and practicality, seven contemporary basketmakers share their designs and techniques for making over twenty unique baskets from materials collected along roadsides and fields, in woods and your own garden. Natural Baskets features baskets and garden ornaments of barks such as birch and red pine; grasses and leaves such as cattails, cornhusks, yucca, iris, and pine needles; vines such as red-twig dogwood, willow, and honeysuckle; and horsehair. Basketry techniques include plaiting, twining, and coiling, as well as free-form styles and miniatures. The authors are well-respected, skilled basketmakers and talented teachers. Each describes the evolution of her own style, as well as how to find and prepare the wild and garden materials she uses. The step-by-step instructions are heavily illustrated; many projects are suitable for novice basketmakers.

The authors and basketmakers are:
Nanct Basket (South Carolina)
Maryanne Gillooly, editor (Massachusetts)
Gerrie Kennedy (Massachusetts)
Diana Macomber (Virginia)
Doris Messick (Maryland)
Cass Schorsch (Michigan)
Sandy Whalen (Michigan)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource by and for nature lovers basket weavers, Sep 12 2008
By

This review is from: Natural Baskets (Paperback)
I have been weaving willow baskets for 10 years and have been wanting to learn of other natural materials that I can harvest myself and other techniques to use these materials. Although many of the materials presented grow in warmer climates, I found this book simple and full of useful information for me. Six different basket weavers share their tips about collecting different materials from nature and what to do with them once collected. They each have and average of 2 to 3 projects to do each, and the illustrations as well as the instructions are very explanatory and easy to understand. I would recommend this book as a resource to anyone who loves harvesting from nature and is looking to experiment with natural fibers and weaving techniques.
