Book Description

April 1 2007

Hawaii’s own Grammy-nominated musician was carving out a growing reputation as a professional surfer when an accident left him too injured to compete at the highest level. Jack Johnson switched to making surf movies but gradually found his voice as a singer-songwriter.

Initially a cult favorite among surfers, he has now crossed over to the mainstream, acclaimed as a “Dylan for the twenty-first century.” His third album, 2005’s In Between Dreams, sold over two million copies worldwide and continues to ride high in album charts, and he has just picked up a BRIT Award for International Breakthrough Act.

Acclaimed George Harrison biographer Marc Shapiro has conducted hours of new interviews with those who knew Johnson both as a surfer and a musician, to produce a compelling portrait of one of rock’s most original new stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Graciousness and humility make the man Jan 14 2008
By Andrea Morris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I do not consider myself a Jack Johnson fan(atic) but my friends will tell you that I am grateful for his music and way of living. This book was a chance to see what made the man. It was most interesting to see how simply and pleasurably he has made his life by his choices and effort to sustain balance--keeping focus off money (and then it came anyway, naturally). I am glad he CONTINUES to love his wife affectionately. I recommend this book if you are interested in seeing how this talented and kind man was shaped by his parents, environment and friends. His music takes me where I want to go...

This book is a well written biography that focuses on Jack Johnson's true loves, the ocean, his wife and family, and his music. Its a great success story of the "nice" guy that has become a great musician, husband, and father.

5.0 out of 5 stars stay true to yourself handbook Feb 29 2008
By Martina Souckova - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
No matter what field you're in the message is clear. Don't compromise yourself to make it. Jack has lived his life uneffected by the luring tmptations of celebrity and bling of the commercial world he's part of. He managed somehow to stay true to his beliefs and ways he wanted to live his life without compromising himself. Not too many examples out there these days I can think of. The real sense of appreciation of all the belssings he has and not being hunrgy for the uncertain more and better shows how he singlehandedly goes against the usual. And the more and better naturally comes. Simple - he loves his wife, his family, his friends, his pipeline and he can give a damn about what he 'should' be doing according to the trend. He's a lucky man and he knows and appreciates it. Mark my words Jack, I'm so inspired we'll be 'neighbors' fairly soon....It's time to put a stop to this madness I got sucked in called working for the man in pursuit of aquiring more 'stuff' to make us happy.
