As a university student investigating the history of natural dyes and also looking for the fundamentals of dyeing, I found this book to be the best resource. Our Uni library only has one copy and it is constantly on HOLD request, so nearly impossible to borrow for more than two weeks. So I bought my own. This is a truly fascinating book. Exhaustively researched and documented. A real library treasure! Thankyou Dominique Cardon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural Dyes, Oct 2 2009
By
This review is from: Natural Dyes (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book for those seeking a scholastic understanding of natural dyes. It is written more as a text book than a simply "how to" book. In my opinion it is appropriately priced at the high end of books within this subject because of the research and depth of knowledge presented. The author covers aspects such as history, development and applications of a naturally attained dye products. In addition to commonly known dye plants there is useful information on indigo, lichens, fungi, molluscs and insects. The list of references is a valuable resource of both old and modern books, papers and reports. A great book for anyone who enjoys learning both the practical and the academic aspects of natural dyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, Oct 16 2009
By T. Ginsberg - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Natural Dyes (Hardcover)
There are many books out there on natural dyes but this is by far the most extensive in terms of identifying different dyestuffs used throughout the world. Written accessibly, but with scientific rigor, it is packed with information including diagrams of chemical structures and botanical and common names for a huge number of dyestuffs. It is organized by color, so if you want to know about all the different madder plants used world wide and their methods of use they are all in the same section. You can use it as you would a dictionary--in other words it is easy to reference--but also very thorough, and includes lore and traditions as well as scientific information. If you are a beginner looking for a straightforward how-to-book this isn't it. But if you are interested in long term, serious study of dyestuffs and techniques it is the most complete information you can find, and an essential addition to your book shelf. I eagerly awaited this book's translation into English and paid more than the current price--but it was and is well worth it.
