A Perfect Refrence Book!, Feb 25 2006
This review is from: Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats (Paperback)
I agree -this book is a staple along with Dr. Pitcairn’s book.
I am unhappy with the extremely uninformed review by A. Louis Shor for the Library Journal. Why someone who clearly knows nothing about holistic medicine is reviewing such a book is a mystery. His comment about the author Diane Stein recommending arsenic is seriously misleading as the author is referring to a Homeopathic preparation called Arsinicum Album which is completely different from the organic property he is referring to. It is a shame there is still such ridiculously uninformed reactionary reflexes to holistic medicine. Thankfully there are a great many Veterinarians who understand the value of Holistic practices including Homeopathy.
You only have to go to these websites to see what I mean:
American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association
American Veterinary Chiropractic Association
Veterinary Institute of Integrative Medicine
The Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy
This is a fine book which I have had in my personal library for over 15 years. Not that I expect that point to mean anything to may readers, however if you are looking for one book that collates all the major points for integrative and holistic animal healing from most of major contributors on the subject: Anitra Frazer, Pat McKay, Juliette de Bairacli Levy, Dr Richard Pitcairn DVM, Dr George Macleod DVM, Dr Wendell Belfield DVM, Dr Alfred Plechner DVM to name a few –THIS IS THE BOOK!
The book covers many major approaches to healing:
Nutrition/Supplements
Diets/Homemade food
Herbs
Naturopathy
Homeopathy
And then all other integrative approaches one could incorporate into care:
Chiropractic
Acupressure
And more
It is possibly the best all in one book for holistic pet care I have since it incorporates all the major points from other authors on the many subjects –diets perspectives from all the players including Pitcairn, Anitra Frazer and Pat McKay, opinions from all the voices on each subject; plus she has included comprehensive tables and charts explaining all the major herbs and their properties, homeopathic medicines and their most common uses, charts of pressure points and more.
This is a very well thought out reference book packed with information which the reader can then decide to incorporate into care for their pet or not. You get a very big picture –you are not expected to use every technique.

Great information but beware New Age writing style, Nov 12 1999

This review is from: Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats (Paperback)
I love this book. I enjoyed reading it and I use it as an occasional reference. I particularly like the Reiki healing and Flower Essence sections. The section on pet death was very beautiful. Unfortunately, when I tried to share this book with my husband, his masculinity was threatened by the exclusive use of the female pronouns and the references to The Patriarchy. Women are used to reading books with only male pronouns and with insults to women, but many men may be unable to read this book. Also, this book will appeal to the intuitively inclined, rather than to the scientific or literal minded. Diane Stein's book The Natural Remedy Book for Dogs and Cats covers many of the same topics in more detail, and written in a more universal style.
