Book Description

Dec 31 1999
“Soap is...one of the better crafts to consider as gifts...supplies directions for more than 20 different kinds of hand-milled soap, an easier process than starting from lye...instructions extend to bath oils and salts and to packaging, labeling, and creating a munificence of fragrance. Step-by-step descriptions are boldly illustrated with color photographs. Who could resist all-natural camomile oatmeal soap or effervescent all-natural champagne bubble bath?”—Booklist.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not about making soap! April 4 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is NOT about making soap. It is about milling soap -- grating already-made soap, melting it, and then adding extra ingredients. Useless if you actually want to make soap. Not sure where the title came from but it has nothing to do with the actual content of the book. I will be returning my copy.

1.0 out of 5 stars totally misleading title May 24 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book so that I could learn how to make my own natural soap. Well, this book gives you neither "natural" nor "soapmaking". There isn't a single real recipe for soap - the projects in this book use soap that have already been made - and many of the additives are artificial.

Artificial candle dye and artificial fragrances mixed with ground up bits of soap that someone else made doesn't qualify for natural soapmaking in my book.

I ordered this book to supplement my soap and natural beauty products library. From the title and photo on the front of the book, you would think you were going to find recipes for making soap out of natural ingredients. Not the case. I do not consider taking a bar of soap that I bought at the grocery store, grating it up and melting it into a new shape "making soap". Nor do I consider dish soap a "natural ingredient". I was shocked to see dish soap as a primary ingredient in many of the recipes for bubble bath. There are whopping 3 recipes in this entire book that I'd consider "natural" and none of them are soap. Extremely disappointed, don't waste your money.

The best thing about this book is the section on packaging. The suites of products look great.

2.0 out of 5 stars "Natual" is not the word I'd use...
This book has one basic recipe: it describes the difference between soap and detergent, and then tells you to pick your "base soap" from one of the real soaps available... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Packaging Ideas!
This book is perfect if you are looking to give gift baskets and such for any event. I'm not too fond of the whole hand-milled soap idea since glycerine is so cheap and available... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't have to raise chickens to cook "real" eggs!
I have read and used Marie's "Natural Soapmaking" book in it's paperback version. As a nutritionist I would rather focus on the enhancements rather than the actual soap. Read more
