If you have Type II diabetes, this book can save your life. The information will help you understand what's going on in your body with this disease, and how you can reverse it. YES, reverse it!! Get off the Metformin and other drugs you may be taking. Dr. Barnard has a scientifically proven program that helps Type II diabetics (Type I diabetics, who will always need insulin, can still benefit by reading this book). If you don't have diabetes, but have a history of it in your family, this book will show you how you can prevent it. There's an excellent menu plan and lots of recipes at the back.

I read this book with the intention of seeing if there was something I could learn to help my sisters and a friend who are diabetic. I found what Dr. Barnard had to say just made sense, so I've adopted the changes he recommended with results that I've noticed almost immediately.

Dr. Barnard's approach is based on scientific results, is practical to implement and is easier to do than you might think at first. He has a great writing style, doesn't preach anything, and doesn't promote anything he doesn't have evidence of. I found that really refreshing.

If you are concerned about diabetes or heart health, read this book and give it a shot. Good luck!

For years I have struggled with my weight and, most recently, the inevitable consequence of Type II diabetes. I tried to follow the diabetic diet, but was always hungry. I lost interest in cooking, because there did not seem to be any point. Slowly and inexorably, my numbers went up and my meds had to be increased. Every night I went to bed either hungry or guilty, because I had eaten something I should not have. I was always tired and everything hurt. Every cell in my body was so inflamed that just pushing on my skin, anywhere, caused pain. I was battling depression daily.

The research and science outlined by Dr Barnard was solid and the conclusions made sense. Following the advice in this book has changed my life. I eat well, am never hungry unless my stomach is empty - and then it's real hunger. I am losing weight at the rate of about 2 lbs a week - and most importantly - my pain is gone. I highly recommend this to anyone who is struggling with Type II Diabetes.

I have been following this way of eating for 1 week. I have lost 6 pounds, have lowered my blood pressure and blood sugar considerably, and feel so much more energetic. I'm never hungry and get excited about trying new recipes. The book is easy to follow, concise and to the point. If you are frustrated with medications and lack of weight loss I highly recommend this book. It is changing my life for the better.

I picked this book up when I was returning from an attempt to have a angiogram done. The decision was made not to have it when my kidney function scored a 22. After reading the book, I decided to try the program for a week. Three weeks later testing showed the kidney reading was 31. My Metformin intake was cut inn half. Gliburide was gone. The insulin dosage was dropping.
A year and a half later my daily insulin has dropped from 20 units x 3 times daily to 6. The night insulin dosage has dropped from 58 to 26.
Certainly, for me this book was a life saver

I enjoyed this book also but found the food selections too restrictive for a lifetime of eating. This is basically a vegan diet. A very good one, though.

I purchased this book for my brother who had an unhealed wound on the bottom of his foot. He just finished his third stay at the hospital, all three stays lasted more than a week and he was pumped with antibiotics. He walked around with a specially fitted boot to not apply pressure to the wound. He was at his wits end because it wasn't healing and he lost his job as a professional driver because of it, so he was close to losing everything he had with no job and no money.
He actually followed the diet in Dr. Barnard's book, he became a vegan overnight. I assisted him with making meatless chili and salads. Within one week he noticed the wound was healing. It has been two months now and he has kept it up, which is amazing because he is not a disciplined person. The wound is 80% healed. The nurse that treats his wound at his house is amazed, his doctor is blown away and he promptly bought the book. My brother looks much better overall. He believes this book has saved his life.
