Weak Hero; Decent Writing, Jan 18 2006
By Sean B. Schoonmaker - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Necromunda 4: Junktion (Mass Market Paperback)
This book tells the tale of Sinden Kass, lamplighter for the underhive town of Junktion in Hive Primus on Necromunda. The setting is Games Workshop's Necromunda, an offshoot game in their popular Warhammer 40K universe.
The protagonist, Kass, is clearly fairly young and not terribly mature. As the reader, you want to empathize with his situation, but his passivity and the constant "Why me?" attitude make it difficult. Only for the very last pages of the book does he take an active roll in events rather than simply reacting to whatever portion of the plot falls upon his doorstep. He does not drive the story as much as the story drives him.
There are also quite a few tantalizing plot threads that are never explored to any great degree: what happened to Kass' sister; how exactly did Garm Heliko become who he is.
The writing, however, is decent, and there's plenty of good background tid-bits that really bring some of the settings to life, and quite a few situations that would make excellent Necromunda or Kill Team scenarios if you play Workshop's games. This detail should also satisfy the "fluff"-ologists who read Black Library's offerings for insights into the 40K universe.
Overall, the book would be somewhat disappointing to those looking for a strong protagonist or plot, but that's made up for by good writing and solid background.

Outstanding!, Nov 8 2005

Set in the far, far away future, there is an underworld colony called Necromunda. The city is set up much like a hive. The colony is built in layers. The closer to the surface a person lives, the more wealthy he is. The deeper a person lives, the more poor he is. Needless-to-say, in the deepest levels reside the most brutal people who struggle each day just to survive.
The levels not only reflect the status of the people, but also in the status of the technology. Those in the deeper levels have forgotten much of the technology that exists. Items that would have made the impossible, possible for those living in Junktion.
Sinden Kass is a lamplighter in the town of Junktion. Lamplighters are such a common sight to all Junktioners that most everyone knows them by sight. Yet their community is beginning to pull itself apart. Gangs fight for territory and better weapons. And life in the Underhive is steadily growing worse for Kass and his kit. Someone is murdering off the lamplighters. Kass is about to have the worst time of his life!
***** Before this book I never imagined that there could be so many different types of gangs and I had never seen a plague-zombie. Author Matthew Farrer has created an interesting way of life for the scarred up characters in this novel. One thing is for sure, I never grew bored. The story opens up sounding like a narrative from a soldier undergoing fire. My attention was captured by the very first sentence. When you pick up this story, be sure you have plenty of free time. You will not want to put it down. I read the entire book in one sitting (and lost a lot of sleep). OUTSTANDING! *****

I havent any clue why the black library would publish ANYTHING sans a 2 weeks notice of resignation from this obvious amatuer "writer".
HE is not responsible for the creation of the Necromunda world- it has been around as a table top game for almost a decade if not more, nor did he create 90 percent of the gangs and ideas in that blasphemy of literature.
I am so angry that I spent my hard earned money on 3 logs of you-know-what to feed some unimaginative waste of space.
His use of the perspective and narrative from the main characters of all his books are just sorry, boring, and missing all that make the 40k and Nec series worth reading. Shira and that lamplighting idiot from Junktion need to be killed off by someone who can write, like Dan Abnett or Ian Watson.
Farrer- do the world a favor and write fine print for calculators or something-just cease your destruction of 40k and Nec lore
I have read EVERYTHING thus far in the 40k and Nec lineup of novels from the Black library and can say with total confidence...
...Anyone looking to read anything 40k or Nec-STAY AWAY FROM MATTHEW FARRER!!!
He is no good to the planet Earth as a writer.
