This review is from: Nero Wolfe: The Complete Classic Whodunit Series (DVD)
Nero Wolfe: The Complete Classic Whodunit SeriesFirst, this is a mystery series not a crime drama. Secondly, it's a quirky comedy and thirdly it will keep you guessing as you follow the Sherlocke Holmes-type detective, Nero Wolfe and his side-kick/leg man, Archie Goodwin (Timothy Hutton). Wolfe solves the crime at home using the info Archie retrieves. The daring duo crack cases of murder, blackmail, deception etc. originally seen on A&E. Faithful to Rex Stout's books Nero Wolfe is wierd. On one of his few trips out of his brownstone, he ventures into the depths of winter to retrieve a new gardener for his orchids. Yes, this 300 pound genius cultivates orchids in a greenhouse loft and woe be tide the poor soul who disturbs him. Archie humours him and spends his spare time dancing w/ beutiful young women when not tailing crooks or gathering info or beating up suspects. Ocassionally, they get into power struggles that make the house uncomfortable and the plots thicken. Fritz, A Swiss chef cooks gourmet meals for Wolfe who clearly loves to eat and often tries to bring peace between the two combatants he clearly adores. Besides Wolfe's amd Archie's unique personalities the stories are tight and twist. Another quirky presentation is the fact that there are only about 10 actors. In each story the actor plays a different part, but you clearly recognize them from the last story. The producer has a sense of humour. It gives the series an unusual flavour when an actor is a murderer one week and a victim or a supporting player the next. Wolfe isn't the only wierd player. Archie often acts as narrator as well as star in the series. There are 3 on-call detectives, Fred, Saul and Orie who cover the action when Archie needs help and of course, a stogie-smoking cop who appears periodically and classes w/ Wolfe. This is one of the best mystery series ever filmed if you like an off-beat sense of humour coupled with a serious mystery to be solved. Special Features: The Golden Spider Series Pilot, the making of Nero Wolfe featurette, Cast biographies and filmographies, interactive menus and scene selection. DVD set: 8 thin cases in a cardboard box. Usually four one hour stories per disc. Colour. 24 hours, 56 minutes + extras. A couple of two hour double episodes, eg. The Silent Speaker"
