Control your Nest from Anywhere

A Thermostat for the Smartphone Generation

The Nest Learning Thermostat learns what temperatures you like, turns itself
down when you're away and can be controlled from anywhere over Wi-Fi.

Let's Stop Wasting Energy

Your thermostat controls about half of your energy bill - that's as much as the refrigerator, lighting, TVs, stereos and computers combined. Problem is, a lot of that energy is wasted heating and cooling an empty home.

Programmable thermostats were supposed to help, but they can be hard to program. Many people never program them. So we made it simple -the Nest thermostat programs itself.

Detailed Energy History is available on the Mobile and Web app for the last 10 days. Your Nest Thermostat also sends you an energy summary every month with tips to help you save more.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is secure, private, and reliable. Nest supports HTTPS, SSL and 128-bit encryption.

when your home’s humidity allows.

I installed this last fall with a new 2-stage forced-air furnace. Worked great all winter. I love all the features, particularly the recent software upgrade that allows intermittent fan operation to circulate air. Worked for a while this summer but eventually the Y1(cooling) connector in the base failed. Tried a second one and it failed immediately. Nothing wrong with the furnace or A/C (had two different technicians check the equipment). Did a little research at the Nest website, and found out this is a pretty common problem. The Y1 connector can't handle the voltage. Nest won't admit there is a design flaw and it doesn't look like Nest will be providing redesigned bases. Too bad, I really like it and and will miss all those endearing features. It was great while it lasted but in the end it broke my heart.

Head unit works fine but unfortunately it is now just an expensive paperweight.

I was telling everyone who would listen about how much I loved my Nest. Then last month they 'pushed' it a software update related to their new (and misguided, in my opinion) Protect fire/CO2 alarm. Now my Nest's battery dies when it is connected to WiFi (the remote connection is the main reason I bought the thing) causing it to stop heating my home properly (or at all if I had let the battery die completely). It's -25 outside. I shudder to think what will happen the next time they push an update and I'm away from home and unable to fix it even after hours on hold for tech support and reading the forums looking for my own fix. For now WiFi is turned off while I see if they're going to get a fast update out to repair it, or if it's going in the skeet launcher as a clay-pigeon substitute.

If you're shopping this product I would highly recommend spending some serious time browsing the Nest Community forum. There are a lot of unhappy folk posting there right now.

Nest seems to think that crucial home products like thermostats and fire alarms are AOK to play with and to have rely on unstable updates and wireless connections. I was considering a Protect fire alarm until I discovered that it does not support a wired connection between alarms so that when one alarm activates they all do. They want to rely on a wireless connection, thereby ensuring that the Protect does not function with your existing units so that you have to replace them all. This is why I initially thought it was a misguided product. Now I am certain I will NEVER have one (as if I'm going to trust them with my life). They will get this one chance from me, if they fail to fix the T-stat fast and permanently I won't be trusting them with frozen water pipes in my home either.

Sleek but doesn't work as advertised. Have been trying to fix it for a year now, with customer support of no real help. The themostat will pump cold air in winter (instead of hot) sometimes. It simply reverses hot and cold on random, and then switches back to the right config without even touching it. Old thermostat was boring, but at least did the job.

Ability to control it remotely is amazing. Auto-away function and seeing how much the furnace is running historically is great for conserving energy. Neat too that it can estimate how long it will take to get up to temperature.
Not all Canadian postal codes are set up in Weather Underground, where Nest gets its outdoor data, so weather isn't 100% accurate but it's close.

Executive Summary: Cool toy, but it might fail on you when you need it the most.

I bought this in April 2013 - it seemed to work fine, but then it was spring/summer and I didn't really use my furnace much. Then in October when it started getting cold I noticed my house temperature kept dropping. The nest was calling for heat, but my furnace wouldn't turn on (both house and furnace are brand new). I fiddled around with the nest and got it to work for one heating cycle by dropping the target temp below current temp (cancelling call for heat), then upping the target temp above current temp. It would work for one heating cycle then revert back to not working. This quickly got annoying. Soon after even this didn't work and the furnace would not come on. I called in my furnace company, and the tech said it was the nest. As a precaution, he swapped out the control circuit board with a new one, and away he went. Well a month later, I started having the same problem. Furnace tech came by again and blamed it on the nest. I took down the nest and put my old thermostat on and I haven't had any problems since.

On a side note, I browsed through the nest support forums, and several other people were having the same issue as me. Nest support staff didn't resolve their issue - they just asked them to give them a call. So I decided to give them a call to see what they had to say. I called a total of six times - each time the message said the wait was > 30 minutes to talk to someone; four times I hung up after waiting 10 minutes or so. One time I got through after waiting 45 minutes, only to have the rep not believe that it could be the nest that was causing the issue, then get abruptly disconnected from my call. Nest support wasn't very helpful.

Bottom line: it's a cool toy, but it's a glorified switch and one that they messed up by making it too fancy.
