Review

The efforts of the author are a welcome addition to the fairly meager body of literature on the Oregon desert, and Lake County in particular. -- Robert Boyd, Curator of Western Heritage, The High Desert Museum

Book Description

Netting the Sun offers a carefully crafted diversity of natural and human stoies from a landscape seemingly empty and forlorn to passing casual travelers. This surprising interpretation of south central Oregon's botony, geology, wildlife, ethnography, and history reveals what a truly special place the high desert is.

Born in the sagebrush community of Lakeview in 1941, the author moved on following high school graduation. But as with many native sons and daughters from America's out-of-the-way places, the urge to return to his roots proved irresistible in middle age.

"I endeavored to write this collection about the Oregon desert because of my childhood there," says Adams, "but also because it is a place of startling mystery, subdued danger, and beauty."

As a long time devotee of Oregon east of the Cascades, I found this book to be great addition to the writings about the Oregon desert. Mr. Adams has a good feel for the unique ecosystems and people of central and eastern Oregon and he writes poetically about them. The chapters are are a series of short essays, each of them covering various aspects of life in SE Oregon. He is a strong advocate for trying to appreciate and sustain some of the remnant plant life, animals, and natural areas in the region of his birth. He is fascinated by the Native Americans who lived for millennia under sometimes harsh conditions. His photography and poetry add to the collection. I find myself going back to reread a number of my favorite chapters. I hope that the author can find other subjects that he is equally passionate about. I would look forward to his musings on them. This is a book that lovers of the Oregon Desert should have.

Took me back home. Been there, done that, saw most of it. Just as advertised, and still in the shrink wrap. Great job. Thanks.
