Never Love A Highlander, Oct 26 2011
By M. Whitmore "lovetoreadforfun" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Never Love a Highlander (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been excited to read Caelen's story ever since I finished reading book 2, Seduction of a Highland Lass. With each book, Caelen's character has grown and become more in depth to the point where he may be my favorite McCabe brother.
We were introduced to Rionna in book 1. It was arranged that she marry Ewan, the eldest McCabe brother, to create an alliance with the McDonald and McCabe clans. If you've read book 1, you know that things didn't go as planned. Ewan married Mairin so Alaric stepped up to the plate. Alaric ended up marrying Keeley and Caelen was the lucky brother to finally unite the two clans by marrying Rionna. Rionna isn't like most women. She wears men clothing. She is skillful with the sword. And like the other women that the McCabe men have fallen for, she's stubborn and independent.
Never Love a Highlander did not disappoint. Caelen and Rionna's relationship was rocky from the start. After being handed off and rejected by two of the McCabe men, it would be easy for Rionna to be bitter and to wallow in self-pity. But she didn't. She accepted her duty to her clan and accepted her marriage to Caelen. Caelen and Rionna are very similar and this similarity caused them to butt heads throughout the book. Caelen, in his own neanderthal way, wants to protect Rionna but in the end, he realized that by doing so, he is forcing her to deny a part of herself.
The romance between Caelen and Rionna wasn't as emotional and epic (for a lack of a better word) as the romances in the previous two books and I was okay with that. These are two practical people who are getting married to help their family, out of duty. There are no rose-colored glasses blurring the reality of their situation.
I hope that this isn't the last of the McCabe family. I've really enjoyed this series and I don't want it to end. The McCabe right hand man, Gannon, deserves a lass of his own and hope that one day, in the near future, he was get his own book.
I highly recommend this series if you're a fan of Maya Banks and highlander romances.

Wonderful Conclusion To The Trilogy, Oct 25 2011

This review is from: Never Love a Highlander (Mass Market Paperback)
I've never read historical romance before, but I'm a fan of other Maya Banks' books, so when I heard about the McCabe trilogy, I decided to give them a try. I loved "In Bed With a Highlander," liked "Seduction of a Highland Lass," but I have to say, "Never Love a Highlander" was my favorite! Caelen and Rionna marry out of a sense of duty, and Caelen returns with Rionna to take over as laird of the McDonald clan. To say this couple had a lot to deal with is an almost comical understatement! They marry out of a sense of duty after Rionna has been jilted by Caelen's older brother, Alaric. Rionna is very aware of the fact that she's essentially been rejected by two men (the two older McCabe brothers). Caelen is reluctant to love again after a woman he previously loved betrayed his clan, leading to the death of his father and devastating his clan.
Then there's their similar strong and stubborn warrior personalities to make things even more difficult! Caelen wants to make Rionna drop her warrior ways and act as the lady of the keep rather than fight like the warrior she is. Rionna tries to go along with his plans but with terrible results when it leaves her extremely vulnerable. Worse, Caelen has difficulty earning the loyalty of his new clan, which is a serious issue since war with another laird is imminent.
Yet the way Caelen and Rionna come together, and fall in love despite themselves, is a wonderful story. The conclusion is amazing. This is a wonderful conclusion to this trilogy; Maya Banks has worked her magic again!

Immensely wonderful Historical Highland Trilogy, Jan 13 2012

Never Love a Highlander was a spectacular ending to an immensely wonderful Historical Highland Trilogy. I loved each and every book and will happily add to my re-read list.
Each of the McCabe brother's personalities were vastly different and each of their story was completely different. I adored each one of them and for various reasons. Caelen was an awesome character to get to know. He seemed quiet in the first two books and there was a lot of mystery around him. What made him tick? What was he thinking? There was just enough of these lingering questions left over from the first two books to have me eagerly dive into his own book.
Caelen and Rionna were literally thrown together. I felt badly for Rionna as she was being rejected and tossed around from betrothed to betrothed. She deserved better but each time she held her head high and always her loyalty and duty came first. In fact, she was a little intimated by Caelen and he did little to resolve her of those feelings. Rionna earned my respect immediately and I liked her very much from Seduction of a Highland Lass book 2.
Caelen continued to be secretive to me. Of the brothers he had the most romantic flowery words flow from his mouth in the intimate scenes but outside of Rionna's and his private chamber, he was all alpha and abrupt. He was so gentle in private but as Rionna stated it, "Tis the truth I'll never bear a child if he doesn't learn to close his mouth at the appropriate time."
Eventually their love does bloom and Caelen and Rionna are the most suited couple for each other. They endured a lot together in Never Love a Highlander. I don't want to pepper the review with spoilers but there was never a dull moment. Excellent read on their journey of love and with lots of added action the plot was extremely engaging. I want to re-read the series right now!
I really hope the loyal Gannon gets a book or a happy ending somewhere. Not that he was miserable but he just deserves one.
Teasers - Winter in Scotland, husband and wife sword sparring, Caelen writing personal thoughts, extremely brave Rionna
