This review is from: Never Sleep with a Suspect on Gabriola Island: An Islands Investigations International Mystery (Paperback)
Do Canadians ever commit murder? Can a retired investigative journalist out-sleuth the Mounties? Is it actually true that B.C. ferries food doesn't suck any more?
The answers to these and other questions are tantalizing raised and hilariously answered in the first of what seems like a promising series. Set on the Left Coast islands located in those awkwardly shared Canadian/U.S. waters, this murder mystery romps over geography, politics, cuisine, gender and sexual mores, the hassles of border crossings, and the business end of the art world. (British) Columbian pot, aesthetic pretentiousness, born-again fundamentalists and a rogue Mossad agent populate the narrative as well, as does one notably mediocre pizza parlor.
You'll visit this island-set mystery for the plot and its delightfully ironic ending, but stay for the numerous characters and witty dialgoue. An enjoyable "must read" for both mystery fans and those interested in the flavour of life as informed by AIDS, Homeland Security, greed, lust and the vageries of inter-island ferry schedules.
