This review is from: Never Would Have Made It: The Rise of Tyler Perry, the Most Powerful Entertainer in Black America (and What It Really Took to Get Him There) (Hardcover)
This was a very compelling and well written story that illustrates in great detail one of the most brilliant artist of our time. I think Tyler Perry is a genius but I will admit as I'm sure he will that he had help getting to where he is. I just didn't know Melvin (a tireless promoter of success and eventually Nia (a believer of dreams) and Authur (a tyrant who has yet to learn that there is no honor amongst thieves) and whoever this rob from the needy and give to the needy drug dealer is was as much a part of it during the embryonic stages of Perry's success. I'm quite sure if we were to lift the veil off many of our most beloved superstars, there is a jaw-dropping story to be told. Unfortunately for Melvin and his bright-eyed youth, a fast moving, dream-chasing, leave the family at home, go-getter has done what many of us do and that is be far too quick to trust others without legal documentation when there are untold fortunes to be reaped. Dead presidents, like bullets move at a high velocity and have no friends. If these things are even remotely true, Tyler Perry seems to me like someone who would come back and compensate and if they are not, at least Melvin got to tell his side of the story. This was a great and fast read that I managed to get through in one sitting over the span of under three hours. I highly recommend it to anyone who just loves themselves some Tyler Perry and would love to see Madea respond to Mr. Childs, who I hope can find another diamond in the rough without so much sacrifice this time. We can just see her now as she catches wind of this book and in a brief monologue responds via the Mark 4:39 Bible verse "Peace, be still" because we all know Madea keeps her a piece of steel!
