Despite what the title may imply, New Beginning doesn't see Tracy Chapman adopting a new musical persona, as so many singer-songwriters have done to boost their declining credibility. If anything, her style is as conservative as it was on her previous three albums. That said, the contents of New Beginning are slightly lighter than her eponymous debut, and her political views--which were emblazoned all over her second album, Crossroads--have been toned down. "Give Me One Reason" is a punchy bluesy number, and the "Smoke And Ashes" is a stylish, romantic composition. Admittedly, nothing can match the originality and brilliance of her debut album, but New Beginning proves that she is still just as unique and relevant in a world full of Tracy Chapman wannabes. --John Galilee

Wonderous, Authentic, & Warm,

I have eclectic tastes in music (alternative rock, R & B/soul, reggae, folk) -- yet this is truly one of my favorite CDs...I am not sure if it is truly brilliant, but I definitely emotionally & musically connect with it. Tracy has grown (up), demonstrated by the increased nuance and textures... Surely one can't expect the naive & angry freshness of her debut... Instead this satisfies more, and yet avoids "middle of the road" status. "New Beginning", "Cold Feet:, & "The Promise" are amazing songs (melody, lyrics, textures). Wonderful stuff. Cheers.

I always liked Tracy's music from listening to her songs played on the radio, but this CD made me fall in love with her music, lyrics, vocals and the soulfulness of it all.A truly must-have!!

I adore this cd! Tracy Chapman is by far my favourite musician and this cd will not let any of her fans down. It is a mature cd with rich ballads, socially conscious lyrics and an excellent instrumental base, which is evident in every song. If you have never listened to any Tracy Chapman before, I recommmend this as your first CD because it is such a solid cd. As with all Tracy Chapman cd's, each song is a different performance that you will want to savour and you will not find yourself wanting to skip over any of her songs.
