Faster than you can say "double kick drum" and to the delight of fans, Vancouver's Strapping Young Lad have followed up their 2005 CD, Alien, with The New Black. The recipe for Strapping's underground success? Take one pinch of death metal, add some Queen-style musical theatrics and industrial keyboard sounds, then mix those qualities with wickedly funny lyrics and a warm embrace of metal clichés. The result is a truly unique style, deftly captured on this, the group's fifth disc.

The project is ultimately a showcase for Devin Townsend--the singer/producer of the group--whose sound garners respect from many diverse parts of the music scene. On The New Black, guests include Bif Naked--who contributes vocal licks to the untitled track (also known as "F--ker")--and GWAR's Oderus Urungus, who enhances Townsend's diatribe against the music industry in "Far Beyond Metal." The title track is a standout, showcasing the Lamb of God influence on the band (Townsend produced LOG's As the Palaces Burn) while at the same time displaying the nearly bionic talents of drummer Gene Hoglan. One of SYL's strengths is its frontman's ability to write and perform in a number of different metal styles, and the slowed-down beauty of "Almost Again" is the perfect place for Townsend's warm, full pipes. Hands-down, the winner of the "future-devil-horn-anthem" award goes to "You Suck" with its hilarious call-and-response chorus, filled with words far too unprintable to be quoted here, but definitely worth checking out. --Denise Sheppard

Album Description

Limited Edition digpack pressing of their 2006 album features two bonus tracks: 'Long Pig' and 'Zodiac'. Canadian extremists Strapping Young Lad have delivered their most challenging release to date with The New Black. The soon-to-be genre defying epic showcases a new dimension of the SYL beast that puts an emphasis on incorporating hooks and catchier melodies into the group's renowned digital chaos. It's safe to say that you can expect the unexpected. Century Media.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aliens....., July 11 2006

Chances are the average listener will find SYL very irritating.

The velocity that this band plays at is mind blowing.

The New Black follows very close on the heels of Alien an effort that displayed main man Devin Townsends mathmatical insanity note for note perfectly.

Gene Hoglan formely of the early 80's death metal band Dark Angel only becomes a better drummer with every new SYL cd.

He has no equal!!!

Jed Simon & Byron Stroud(Fear Factory)compliment and add to the wall of sound created by Gene & Devin with equal distinctive brilliance.

Beleive me when I say if your blown away by the intensity you hear on of their cd's the show these gentlemen put on is astronomical.

I would love to see Slayer & SYL play together.

Both of these groups defy logic & reason & the very laws of physics with the sheer volume of their music. The only difference I can see between Slayer & SYL is that SYL have a sense of humor.

I saw Lad several months back and Devin had me laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face and I couldnt breathe for allmost 45 minutes.

Love em or hate em Strapping Young Lad are the band to end all bands.

If your not listening allready start right now!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than City? I think so., July 30 2006

Dave Fergusson (Prince George, BC, CAN) - See all my reviews

This is by far one of the most amazing cd's I've purchased recently. The drumming keeps getting better and better on these SYL cd's. The only thing that I noticed is that instead of the drums being laid down live in one take (Gene 'The Atomic Clock' Hoglan style), the drums were actually edited as well. No biggie, I mean he can probably still pull all this stuff off live anyways.

The weakest point on the entire album is the poorly redone 'Far Beyond Metal' - The original version from the live album 'No Sleep Till Bedtime' is way better, even WITH Oderus Urungus singing on the song.

The song after 'Far Beyond Metal' is listed as blank on the back of the jewel case, but the name of the song is listed in the liner notes as 'F*cker' - It's good to see Dev being backed up with some other solid Canadian talent (Bif), maybe she can shine some light on this unknown (in Canada) talent.

Devin Townsend is one of the greatest metal producer/performers in Canada--nay, the world.

Long live the Dev!

All Hail the New Flesh!

5.0 out of 5 stars You know its good!, July 18 2006

The New Black or "Anal is the new oral" has Devin subtitled it in a interview in the new issue of Revolver magazine, is all that you can expect of a SYL record: a storm of some of the most innovative and creative metal out there. Its loud, its heavy and its fast. (yes Gene Hoglan is the best drummer out there, no one can drum like he does - wearing doc marten boots!!!!!!!)

I think its a bit weird to find Bif Naked (another canadian) on the album, not used to have another voice with Devin. Well.. the song still rocks!

If you like the "out of the ordinary", stuff that really pushes the edge, you will definitly like SYL.
