Is it live or is it iMac? "No sequencers or samplers were used in the recording of this album," announces the New Deal in the sleeve of their official debut (after three self-released live albums). The Toronto-based, self-proclaimed "live improvised breakbeat house" band isn't out to revolutionize dance music, exactly, but they do prove drum & bass, house, and other club-land mainstays don't have to be solely the province of technogeeks with laptops. This album might not make a strong case for one method being better than another--perhaps only the most discerning drum & bass purist will be able to detect the organic origins of "Self Orbit," for instance--but it certainly shows the trio are accomplished players capable of some delirious downtown grooves. Using only bass, drums, and keyboards, along with the occasional voice, trumpet, and theremin, the group journeys into spacey disco lounge in "The Ray Parker Suite: Part 1" and strikes up thumping Basement Jaxx-type house on "Back to the Middle." Vocal tracks are used to humorous effect--against the chilled vibe of "Exciting New Direction," a voice from the human resources department of a dot-com company ends with the kiss-off, "I'm calling to inform you that your position has not been identified as part of our new marketing strategy and has been eliminated." As finely constructed as dance-floor excursions like the nine-minute "Technobeam" are, however, the disc does leave the listener wanting more--that is, to really see these guys kick it out live. --Shawn Conner

Innovative melodic live techno music,

The New Deal is one of the many up and coming electronic music bands. This CD stands as a prime example of why they are becoming so popular. This CD amazing from start to finish taking the listener through tight techno grooves to mellow trippy jams.

Get out the headphones. This self titled disc is very good, very enjoyable, and I'm glad I picked it up. BUT, I saw them live this spring and they had sooo much more energy live. They had the crowd jumpin' like it was a rave, and this was outside in 40 degree weather. I had no idea who they were until then, but I was so impressed that I made the point to get something, and that doesn't happen too often. I have not heard the "live" cd's, but I imagine they might be better. Best though is to catch these guys in action. It's fun.

I first heard about these guys via Much Music, a canadian music channel, about 2 years ago. I liked some of there stuff then but didn't really look into detail.Yesterday, the guys came down to Hamilton Ontario and I thought it would be a perfect time to go down at check them out - Im so glad I did - these guys rock out. The keyboardist and drummest have got so much attitude while the basist is chill but still manages to impress you with his funky base lines. Did I mention the drummer plays the bongo's AND beat-boxes? Yeah - truely and amazing percusionist. If your looking for a wide variety of house music with a Chemical Brothers/ Crystal Method feel to them, then you've come to the right place. This CD is great - buy it!
