The New Encyclopedia of Islam is the only single-volume work in print which so comprehensively encompasses the beliefs, practices, history and culture of the Islamic world, in over 1300 entries. It has the further unique advantage of being written by a Western scholar of the Islamic faith, and has thus been already widely praised for straddling the cultures with an understanding and respect for the themes and topics covered. All aspects of religious belief, ritual, practices, prayer, significant political movements, spiritual and political leaders, art, architecture, sects, law, social institutions, history, ethnography, nations and states, languages, science, major cities and centers of learning are covered. --Worldwide coverage --Nearly 1300 accessible entries --Assumes no previous knowledge of Islam --24 pages of full-color photographs --16 pages of color maps, dynastic charts, and diagrams --The most comprehensive single-volume reference on Islam available --60 new or substantially revised entries from the last edition New or substantially revised entries in the 2001 edition: Abd al-Qadir, Amir Ahkam Ahmad of Rae Bareilly Alexander's Wall Albania Algerian Democratic Republic Ali Shir Nava'i Amir Khusraw Dihlawi Aqsaqalism Atabat Azad Bangladesh Barabanschiki Bareilly Barilwis Basmachis Beloshaposhniki Bosnia and Herzegovina Constitution of Medina Deoband Dönmeh Dungan Elkhasaios Faraidi Movement Faramush Khaneh Fundamentalism Ghalib, Mirza Asad Allah Khan Hafiz Hamas Harrah Herat Ibn Masarrah Khaksars Ilyas Isfahan Istanbul Jama' Kalmuck Kazakhstan Khiva Khomeini Kirghiz Kubra, Najm ad-Din Kumun Kurds Lahore Lakhmids Mawardi Ossetians Ovliad Rabitah al-Islamiyyah Rudaki Russia de Sacy Sahmi-i Imam Tablighi Jama' aat Tajiks Taliban Turkmenistan Zikrism

2.0 out of 5 stars The Biased Unverified Encyclopedia of Islam, Feb 2 2010

It is true that at this price, you won't find any other encyclopedia on Islam in English. And Huston's comments in the introduction that it is impressive that one man alone could put this together and write on such a wide variety of subjects also has some truth. But that is precisely the problem, I think - a one-man encyclopedia.

The work has strong biases and leanings so it is not `balanced' as an encyclopedia should be. For example, it is obvious that the author has a strong taste for Sufism therefore a lot of entries return to the spiritual dimension of the subject matter and often delve in hindu, kabalah, etc. comparisons. The bias against Shias and anyone who is not orthodox Sunni (what the author calls himself) is glaringly obvious, even in the charts at the back showing the division of sects. In fact many of the entries on non-Sunni topics are wrong and the information misleading. In some cases, only one side/view is presented. Thus the title "Encyclopedia of Islam' is misleading. It should have been called Glasse's personal Sunni/Sufi Encyclopedia of Islam.

There is no index/list of the entries, which would have been really helpful.

But perhaps, the greatest disadvantage I found is that the work has absolutely no references/footnotes/citations to anything written/claimed in it. A lot of information is given as facts and you wonder where the author got it. So you can only speculate whether it's his personal opinion, hearsay or taken from a reliable source.

So while it's fun and informative to read many of the entries, it's hard to think of this as a reliable source for scholarly research.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Encyclopedia Of Islam, Mar 15 2002

First of all, I'd like to say "BRAVO" and "EXCELLENT JOB" to the Author and international lecturer Mr. Cyril Glasse.

I used the 1989 edition to find some information about a few entries. I thought i'll just find the entries, read about them, and close the book. But it didn't happen. Each enrty lead me to other entries which were more interesting and so on.

I really enjoyed every second I spent using this encyclopedia. That's what I call a "quality time". That is because I am interested in comparative religion and I like reading about Christianity, Judaism, Freemasonry, and Islam. And this is a very nice addition to my small library of cool books.

Highly recommended...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of terms you hear on the nightly news, July 6 2007

I wanted an overview of the major topics and issues of Islam. This is a great introduction, providing enough basic material to guide further investigation. Not all that many photos, but a good chronology as well as the "family trees" of the sects/off-shoots of Islam, and the major governing groups and individuals.

Worth having.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sets a high standard, April 16 2007

This review is from: New Encyclopedia of Islam: A Revised Edition of the Concise Encyclopedia of Islam (Paperback)
This is THE outstanding reference on Islam for non-Arabic speakers, and to my thinking sets an extremely high standard in terms of clarity, balance and coverage for one-volume reference works generally. Highly recommended.
