Présent sur nombre de productions de ses confrères, le batteur Doug Sharin, leader de Him, est une des figures associées à l'effervescence de la scène post-rock chicagoane. Son jeu, original, a marqué de son empreinte les réalisations de Codeine, Directions In Music et Rex. Beaucoup l'ont découvert grâce à une compilation mise sur pied par Wordsound, un label de Brooklyn dédié au groove sous toutes ses formes. Pour la même écurie, Him a gravé Interpretive Belief System dont l'influence majeure est le dub et les expérimentations de Lee Scratch Perry. Sur New Features, les ambiances distillées sont moins moites, l'influence de ce courant musical, toujours présente, se faisant moins sentir que celle de la musique brésilienne d'Airto Moreira et Hermeto Pascoal (les percussions et le thème de "Magnified Future"), portées par des rythmiques hypnotiques et répétitives qui, sur le reste de l'album, évoquent le Miles electro-funky de Bitches Brew et On The Corner ainsi que Weather Report sur Tale Spinnin'. experimentational jazz groove...,

If you thought the last person to experiment with jazz was Miles in the 70s, you are mistaken. Jazz and most music in general is all about moving forward, and that is what HiM continues to do. HiM isn't really straight-up jazz, it is like beat-oriented music with jazzy overtones, but I would say that this is their jazziest effort yet. Doug Scharin and about 10 other guys really kick it old school on this cd with horns, percussion, guitars etc.... BUY IT!
