The 80's are still 'alive and kicking',
This review is from: New Gold Dream (Audio CD)
New Gold Dream was a fresh and exciting arrival on the scene when this old fart was struggling his way through super-stressful medical school in the mid 1980's. At the end of many exhausting days I found myself soothed by the subtle background electronic music of songs like 'Someone somewhere in summertime', 'Hunter and the hunted', and ,of course,'New Gold Dream 81-82-83-84'; the music had a way,and still does, of 'massaging' its way through my taught and frazzled skin and muscles and reach my spine where its calming influence allowed me to finally relax. Getting successfully to sleep in order to face yet another day absolutely meant listening to 'Somebody up there likes you' in bed, after a hot shower, with the Koss headphones on. The powerful percussion work at the core of each song also meant that 'New Gold Dream' was a great way to start a new day, like a quadruple espresso for the ears, heart and soul; this 'Simple Minds' masterpiece fulfilled a multitude of needs. Another thing that made this album unique for me was that I liked EVERY SINGLE SONG; there were no 'turkeys' or 'fillers' as used to happen commonly with albums(you know the deal: 1 maybe 2 good songs on the whole album and the rest is all acoustical caca). Finally, I would humbly opine that this album only gets better with age, the sign of a true classic. I enjoy listening to it in its entirety more than ever before whether I'm meditating quietly in our garden, bombing down the 401 on yet another 'road trip', or vegging out on the beach in Varadero with a Corona in one hand and a fine-rolled Cuban cigar in the other.

New Gold Dream - Still Amazing,
This review is from: New Gold Dream (Audio CD)
Had this album when it first came out (way back), and unfortunately gave it away over the years, due to lack of a turntable.I haven't stopped listening to the CD since it came in the mail. Songs are timeless, and still make me want to dance all these years later.

Synthesizers and soft rock,

This review is from: New Gold Dream (Audio CD)
New Gold Dream has an understated, even ethereal air to it, as Simple Minds moved away from their early punk rock roots towards synthesizer soundscapes. Someone Somewhere In Summertime is an evocative pastel shaded number. Colours Fly And Catherine Wheel is a moody piece with light keyboards, whilst Promised You A Miracle, the big hit, has a funky feel, jerky rhythm and catchy hooks. Not all the tracks are memorable, like Big Sleep, which doesn't go anywhere and lacks a proper tune. The instrumental Somebody Up There Likes You is only mildly engaging. The title track has a propulsive beat, beautiful keyboard flourishes and some rousing vocals. The mid tempo ballad Glittering Prize has its moments, Hunter And The Hunted has a more solid rock beat and King Is White And In The Crowd is a slow, brooding song. Ultimately, New Gold Dream provides more style than substance. Simple Minds carved a niche for their distinctive version of synth-rock, but not all of these songs have passed the test of time with flying colours. There is a lack of variety that gives the album an air of monotony. I prefer the late 1970s period Simple Minds when they gave us ageless classics like Chelsea Girl and I Travel.
