I guess it all boils down to this: either you really like Al Kooper or you don't really KNOW Al Kooper's music. Becuase with Al, it's really always been about the music. It took me a long time to get serious about collecting his music, and it hasn't been an easy (or cheap!) journey. I've finally managed to get all his stuff, either on used vinyl or CD. Really, they're all great, and New York City is no exception. This is one I just happen to have on LP and CD, and the CD super. Great sound, good packaging, and, as far as Al's CDs go, a GREAT PRICE. Are you kidding? An Al Kooper CD that has 70s material available for under $10. It's a steal! Great songs, great performances, great arrangements. If, like me, you liked Super Session and the first BS&T but never delved any further, go ahead, take the plunge. Warning: you, like me, may get really hooked, and it will cost you some $$$ to get the rest of his back catalog.

P.S. Also not to missed and now out of print: Soul of a Man, a live retrospective that he recorded with his original bands, Blues Project, BS&T and the Rekooperators. It's a double delight, really awesome. Get it while you still can.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album that could've been even better!, Mar 19 2009

I've been a huge Al fan since the time of Easy Does It and in fact saw Al's UK debut in Aylesbury at the time this album came out so it was a great Kooper period for me. Ok why not 5 stars. The Ballad Of The Hard Rock Kid is totally out of place on the album. It might sound ok on another album but even Al has said if he could choose now he'd remove it. Also Back On My Feet is okish but not up to the high standard of the rest of the album. The rest of the songs are 5 star all the way especially the title track which is an absolute classic.
