Taking their cue from the band's guitarist/Keef-alike Johnny Thunders, hardcore Dolls fans pooh-poohed Todd Rundgren's production as wimpy: twenty-five years after its release, songs like "Personality Crisis" and "Looking for a Kiss" sound more trashily invigorating than ever. Along with the Stooges, the New York Dolls were largely responsible for pioneering the sound and attitude of punk, and this, their self-titled debut, is one of the founding documents of post-'60s rock. Outrageous, shambolic, and bursting with energy, the Dolls borrowed from the amped-up, bluesy swagger of the Rolling Stones, the pop confections of Phil Spector, and the campy theatricality that would flower with the glam movement, yet brought it all together with a visceral impact that recalled the jolt of early rock & roll. Some of these reviews make me sick. "only buy this for historical value"..."if you like glam or punk buy this". Listen,do you like your rock raunchy or clean?--that's all you need to know.As for glam,someone who loves Bowie and T Rex wouldn't necessarily give this album more than one spin. Also, if the power pop side of "punk" is your thing-Jam,Clash(yes Clash--sorry there's not a lot of serious rockin' goin' on there)- this may seem unpolished and hard to swallow. However, if you are a fan of rock you can strut and dance to like the Stones' "brown sugar" , or "jumpin'jack flash"(and the nasty guitar runs and leads)you could dig this music a lot and find that it is the coolest thing you've come across in quite a while. Yes,it is similar to the Stooges(especially the ultra raunchiness of RAW POWER and the other recently released stuff from 1972),-but if you know that then chances are you know this and "understand" it. The problem is that some people don't know much about "music",they know what they like,but they don't know what it's about.

In the 70's the new york dolls did a tour with two off the biggest bands ever areosmith and kiss. The only thing about this tour was that the new york dolls headlined the tour. If it wasn't for horione the new york dolls would have been bigger then life itself, and johnny thunders would have been in the rock and roll hall of fame buy this album listen to great music buy some of the greatest.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It is so raw and beautiful and full of energy and emotion and no one plays the guitar like Johnny Thunders... I've gone through so many copies of this recording, the cassettes wore out, the vinyl is thrashed and now the CD needs replacement. That's a lot of listening and it's still not enough. From start to finish this record is great - no filler or throwaway songs to speak of. Just full on rock and roll at it's finest.
