Description

“The people who come up with these shows are idiots.” - George Findlay, News Director

Few shows in TV history have delivered more dark wit than Ken Finkleman’s groundbreaking series, The Newsroom. Winning legions of fans and numerous awards, both in Canada and around the world, the show is caustically comic, behind-the-scenes look at the workings of a television network’s local newsroom has been applauded by both audiences and critics.

Back this year are anchor Jim (Peter Keleghan), who in the face of world disaster, is plagued with a wardrobe dilemma; Karen (Karen Hines), whose bitchiness is temporarily transformed during a love affair; Matt (Matt Watts), confidante and foil to George; and Allen (Douglas Bell), the overeducated, under-achiever with no voice. Joining the cast is segment producer Jason, played by author Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall (Down to This: Squalor and Splendour in a Big-City Shantytown); Susan (Sarah Strange), George’s boss; and Nora (Kristin Booth), George’s assistant.

In addition to the very funny, very entertaining Finkleman fare, fans are in for a surprise this season as THE NEWSROOM takes a leap into the world of animation in the sixth episode Learning to Fly.

Winner of 2 Gemini Awards including: Best Writing in a Comedy or Variety Program or Series and Best Comedy Program or Series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good finale for a good series, Feb 19 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Newsroom: Season 3 (DVD)
Surprisingly, I found both seasons 1 and 2 of The Newsroom in a bargain bin at a department store and was impressed by its mock-documentary style (this was created before The Office, I believe) and its dark, intelligent humour. Then, I impatiently waited for season 3 to come out on DVD. When I finally got it, I was not disappointed! I definitely do not look at news in the same way after watching the series (supposedly inspired by the CBC). The characters are unlikeable, but you want more of them, and there is a dark preoccupation throughout with sex/love, aging, death and creativity.

I only wish there was more--but, all good shows like this must come to a strong ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Foot Extraction, July 2 2008
By Robert E. Williams "Bob Williams" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Newsroom: Season 3 (DVD)
The character of George Findlay really should have been played by a horse.
With him, the suspense is not, as it was once said of a character on another newsroom type show altogether, how he was going to get his other foot into his mouth, but rather how in the world he was going to extract any of his feet, frequnently more rhan two of them at the same time, from it.
Or maybe an octupus, except they don't actually have feet.
Would actually have preferred to give this one 4.75 stars.
Am just not that much into cartoon allegories, even as well done as the final episode "Learning to Fly"
