More than it seems Oct. 13 2011
By Enrique C. Acosta - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Would someone please tell me when it was the John Bryne upped his game? In the original Dark Horse run the entire story shot by at a break neck pace with no thought given to character development or story. Each issue could have easily been a 12 issue mini series. And yet, somehow, someway, John Bryne has learned how to pace a story. Here he creates a wonderfully crafted sci fi mind bender. Don't let the outer trappings of super hero schtick fool you this is a serious sci fi time travel tale. And don't feel as though you have to go back and read the original run. The whole thing starts off with a nice recap. Personally I can't wait until the next chapter of the Next Men saga. Well done Mr. Byrne

John Byrne--WORLD's Best Storyteller!! Aug. 10 2011
By S. Varela - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I will never get tired of a good, old-fashioned John Byrne story. He is always able to take and insignificant book/character and give it cosmic importance. Where many writers and/or artists have failed to craft an interesting story--John Byrne consistently SUCCEEDS! When you read a John Byrne story, you never want it to end. Thank you, Mr. Byrne for all the years you put into the industry elevating your craft.
Good but flawed, and overpriced Dec 3 2014

This can't really be read separate from Volume 2, and knowledge of the original series is advisable.

As a followup/sequel to John Byrne's Next Men comic book Phase 1, it entertains. As time travel fiction, it's fun if erratic and illogical (changes to the time stream remove the Next Men's special abilities but not their knowledge Pavel and has of the previous history) and it moves a trifle slowly and deliberately. Basically, Byrne loves time travel stories and has fun writing them. One complaint: one of the original Next Men apparently dies off camera, either because Byrne wanted to reduce the size of the cast or grew to dislike him. The absence of resolution is felt and seems needless.

There is a third volume, but I haven't read it, in part because of the cost. IDW has so far failed to put these books into paperback, and there are no reasonably priced secondhand copies available yet. These first two volumes could have been in a single paperback volume and would be reasonably priced.

Dissapointing Nov. 8 2012
By Kit Howat - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Compared to his original run on Next Men, this is a major disappointment. The art was very weak, the story was mediocre. Borders on the term "bad".

John Byrnes Superman dissection goes full sci fi in their last adventures May 4 2014

When a black woman from Harvard is transported to slavery days of the old south you know this is ground breaking as William Shakespeare, dinosaurs, and a Collided are used to tell a great Science Fiction... one of the best
