Book Description

April 1 2008 Severn House Large Print
Private investigator Howie Cross is beaten to a pulp by a couple of thugs, though he has no idea why. Temporarily out of action, he asks Deets Shanahan to take on his one current case. But Shanahan is in no hurry to get involved. It's straightforward enough, in principle: Hugh Dart wants his wife traced. The only thing is, Dart has just finished a 35-year sentence for murdering her.Dart had had the opportunity to murder Barbara, and the motive: he'd taken out a $100,000 life insurance policy for her just before her death. What's more, he was - is - definitely dodgey. But if the investigation is just a wild-goose chase, who called in the thugs?

From Booklist

*Starred Review* When septuagenarian Indianapolis PI Deets Shanahan does a favor for a friend--accompanying a young woman to meet her father--he has no idea that it will lead to one of the most intriguing cases of his career. Melanie Dart hasn't seen her father, Hugh, for 35 years, the time he served for killing his wife. Deets takes an instant dislike to Hugh Dart, a onetime wealthy, charming mover and shaker in Indianapolis political circles who is still slick and slightly sleazy despite his prison term. But the man swears to Deets that he didn't kill his wife and that she is still alive after having stolen millions of dollars that Hugh, by his own admission, raked off in political bribes. Intrigued, Deets decides to check out Dart's story. But his investigations touch a nerve-- he is threatened, his lady friend is threatened, even his dog is threatened. What he eventually finds is a plot as ingenious, wicked, and slick as Hugh Dart himself. In a style reminiscent of Robert B. Parker at his best, Tierney concocts a meaty plot and complements it perfectly with rat-a-tat dialogue, oddball characters, bits of homespun philosophy, and delightfully dry humor. An outstanding entry in a first-rate, too-often-overlooked hard-boiled series. Emily Melton

Having read all of the Deets Shanahan series, I can comfortably say this series and its unlikely hero just keep getting better! Love has done good things for Deets and he is closer to acknowledging that fact now than ever before. Meanwhile, his cronies help the story move along briskly. Tense, realistic, at times comical (the bar owner is a favorite of Deets and of mine!), the latest in the series is a tribute to the very talented Tierney's hometown (Indianapolis) and the author's highly refined sense of character! Bravo!
