Book Description

Nov 4 2008
Nicky Epstein’s blockbuster Edge titles have sold more than 125,000 copies; she’s a needlework star whose every book is eagerly anticipated and snatched up. Now Nicky’s giving devoted readers her most important and wide-ranging collection of patterns yet: a worldwide tour of knitting traditions and techniques, including colorwork, cables, lace, intarsia, and more. She explains the origins and traditional uses of each one, and then goes on to reinvigorate and recombine all these beloved styles in her inimitable way. The result: more than 40 all-new, innovative designs collected in an attractively designed book with a handy ribbon marker. There’s a Celtic Pullover with braided twisted rib strips; a Snowflake Tunic from the Far North; a Felted Tyrolean Capelet with appliqué, cord, and balls; a Spanish Rose Pullover with lace accents; a colorful Peruvian skirt; and an oversized, zipped Navajo Blanket Jacket.
Colorful maps and historical photos make this collection a visual treat, as well as an invaluable tool for knitters seeking new inspiration.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed Jan 28 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is a thoroughly disappointing collection of patterns and a bewilderment on how Epstein could travel the world with the stitch knowledge she seems to have and come away with what appears to be amateur-ish design sense.
The book is divided into world regions: Far North (Scandinavia), Windswept Isles (UK), Old World (western Europe), the Med, Far East and new world (North & South America). Each section contains a history of the knitting arts for the region, along with some beautiful examples of garments from earlier eras. Then each section offers up Epstein's designs & knitting patterns. Despite what has to have been a multitude of inspiration worldwide, Epstein's designs take on the form of awkward, oversized sweaters (that would make anyone look like they've gained 200lbs), super-small toddler-sized sweaters to be knotted up and worn upon one's head as a hat (...speechless), yarn color combination that could only be assembled by someone completely color blind, styling, embellishments, geometric edging and sizing that leave one completely baffled. From start to finish, this reader's spirit sank as each pattern "couldn't get any worse", and, oh my, they did. I suppose the cover photo on the book explains how one could get mislead by this book - from the front it appears to be a lace coat (minus any feminine shaping and a sign of things to come), but turn around wearing this thing and you'll discover from the top back to the hem, a huge slit flapping open back there and bingo, you're wearing a hospital gown.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and breathtaking designs Feb 21 2009
Format:Hardcover
Unlike the previous reviewer I found this book spectacular. I looked at it in a bookstore before buying and had to have it. I actually am a mediocre knitter but work in a fashion related business and cannot resist a book full of beautiful knitted clothing that strays from the usual. I only wish I had the skill to knit these projects, though I may try and push myself just so I can have the Cowichen inspired one. I have shared this book with a number of friends and they all thought it was inspired. As for tiny sweaters worn as hats, they may not be everyone's cup of tea, but showing a sense of whimsy is not a bad thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Dec 11 2009
By Koko
Format:Hardcover
The sweater on the cover is just awful but inside you'll find all sorts of inspiration to incorporate into your own designs.
