That Certain Something!, July 5 2004
Finally, a book that black men will want to read. Nothing personal ladies but all the baby-momma-drama lit does nothing for me. A lady friend of mine gave me this book and I haven't stopped thanking her since. Ladies, this is the perfect gift for those men in your life who like to read. Mr. Jackson really captures the duality of feelings I think we African-American men have to deal with on a day to day basis. There were times when it seemed to me that the author was writing from such a real place that I had to put the book down and really think about what the author was saying. I think that any person of color who reads this book will know exactly how the main character feels, male or female. Just as I hope people not of color will see this book as a eye opener. My only problem with the book was it's length. It was over way too soon. Then again, the book might have lost some of it's intensity if the author had've drug the story out.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, July 1 2004
This review is from: Nigger's Heaven (Hardcover)
There are some books you read and the next week you can't remember anything about them. The good news, this isn't one of those books. Be warned though, it is a very dark, almost bizarre book. Don't worry though, part of the books beauty is its strangeness. The author basically takes the simple biblical annunciation and turns it on its head. Instead of Mary and the announcement of the coming immaculate birth, the author imagines a young African American man who receives news that he has been chosen to help cleanse the world of evil. I really liked the way you are immediately thrown into the mind of the main character when the book opens. Dealing with themes that are as large as the diaspora itself. This can make it hard to tell someone just exactly what the book is really about. One would think that with so many issues being touched upon the author would lose focus. Instead, this sort of juggling act seems to add an intensity that goes straight to one's psyche. The author has infused so much pathos into his main character, that the reader is torn between wanting to dislike him and feeling a need to defend his actions. The style of the book might best be described as black magic realism. Music is also a very real part of the story and one can almost hear the melody flowing through the pages. Written in the first person, I loved the way the author used shifting perceptions to keep us wondering if what we were being told was really happening or just a figment of the main character's imagination. Reading this book I couldn't help but think of the DC sniper as well as what role society plays in the creation of someone like that? If you enjoy books that make you think as well as feel, Nigger's Heaven is a must. If you only wish to read about beautiful things, remember, just as at the beginning of 'Night of The Living Dead', you have been warned!

SPEAK BROTHER! SPEAK!!!!!, May 22 2004
This review is from: Nigger's Heaven (Hardcover)
This book is completely off the chain.I purchased it one afternoon having been intrigued by its title. Not one to buy hardcovers, I'm really glad I did. This book is a keeper.I must admit, I had no idea what to expect but the cover looked interesting. Nothing prepared me for the incredible story inside. Turning a magnifying glass on our own black community, Mr. Jackson comes up with a gaping wound overflowing with pus-like self-hatred. The author has really delivered an amazing & powerful novel. - In the same way that ALESSANDRO BARICCO'S SILK was a mere 91 pages of perfection, NIGGER'S HEAVEN performs a sort of dazzling high-wire act at only 107. Is what we read real or is it all in the mind of the books protagonist? By constantly keeping us guessing, Mr. Jackson allows his tale of a troubled young black man to unfold, like tiny grenades across our psyche. I found myself rereading passages of this book over and over again in disbelief. This book says things that for me, too many of our African-American writers are afraid to say. It is because of the author's honesty in telling his story that NIGGER'S HEAVEN grips you and refuses to let go until it reachings its shocking conclusion. At first, readers may be a bit put of by Mr. Jackson's wrong sentence structures. I was not sure if these were mistakes or intentional. Then I visited the author's web site where he talked of trying to capture what his characters where saying to him as truthfully as possible. Which makes sense, because the novel actually feels like you've been given many different transcripts, that just happen to be about the same person. NIGGER'S HEAVEN is one of those books I think people will either love or hate - Part African-American fiction - part sci-fi - part greek tragedy - Mr. Jackson's style of writing is like a revelation. NIGGER'S HEAVEN is pure mad genius. The author is supposedly working on a new book and I for one can't wait!
