Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Talbot's latest novel (after The Bog) is a bit of an oddity. Although ostensibly a horror story, stylistically it's remire Hale breeds and trains racing quarterhorses and Diana gardens assiduously. Dynamic and well-organized as the Caldwells appear to be, their family life is in acute crisis. Their son Roger has dropped out of college and works as a cook in California; daughter Bethany is on probation in a residential program for teenagers, having participated in a car theft. Hale's business is overextended, and he is drinking heavily. Diana, her academic career and extramarital affairs equally unsuccessful, is painfully conscious that she and Hale have failed to become the perfect parents they set out to be. In clear, measured prose Lowry copiously and meticulously describes the Caldwells gardening, cooking and caring for their horses, but this contributes little to our understanding and becomes tiresome. There are good sketches of minor characters, lifelike dialogue and a gripping conclusionbut the reader's interest is seized too late, and the final drama does not substitute for lack of depth, coherence or a commanding voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mix of fantasy and horror, May 8 2000
By r. demedeiros - Published on Amazon.com

I read this book almost 8-9 years ago and remember that it was one of the first books that I could not put down. The closer I got to the end, the more intrigued I became. This good vs. evil story is superbly engrossing and well-written.Should be made into a movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Masterpiece of Horror, Jan 21 2010
By P. Cowan "Horrorfan" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Night Things (Hardcover)
This is a terrific horror novel. It takes place in an old mansion (of 160 rooms) in the Adirondack mountains that hides an intriguing and unqiue dark secret to it. The lead characters are a young woman, newlywed to a famous rock musician and her son from a previous relationship. The attempt to merge the three into a family is difficult. Things get worse when the boy is visited by spectral beings in the house. I have reread this novel on several occasions and enjoyed it each time. The blurb from publishers weekly above appears to be from some other book entirely and should be discounted. This is a relatively short haunted house style novel that will keep you hooked from beginning to end and deserves to be remembered as one of the greats.
